Exterior intake scoops??

1982 M20J:  Are the air intake vents (scoops)  supposed to have screens in them to keep dirt and bugs out of the cockpit? This aircraft's vents are completely open to the environment. Thanks in advance.

Our J has no filters or mesh either.

No filters on mine... a M 20 C. but also, never had a problem with bugs...

I have screens on mine but guessing by the other posts somebody put them on after the fact.  Not exactly difficult to do if you so desire it.
