Another question: Has any one had any luck sourcing the fuel gauge that readable on the ground on the walk around for the M20R.  Can gauges from other models be used.

Mine fell out some time ago, I hope it did not hit anyone one!  My service center can't find a replacement.  Mooney was not helpful.

Unfortunately they're a Mooney-only item.  The manufacturer is still around, but only sells to Mooney so the best you can do is get on a list and hope/wait.  Call Maxwell or LASAR or other major service center.

Rochester Dial doesn't only sell to Mooney.  Many various resellers carry Rochester dials but you have a minimum order with them.  i.e. Aircraft Spruce can special order these but that requires a minimum order of 10 dials.  But last I heard, Houston Tank Specialists may have some.  Last I checked with WeepNoMore/Oasis they were out.

I called Rochester Sensors (current business name) back in May 2024 and talked to Cheryl Manning. She said that they would not sell retail -- I would have to order from a distributor. Attached is the distributor list she emailed me. The hitch is that you have to know the part number which is not the number on the dial face but is (in)conveniently located on the back of the gauge. Someone posted that 5404S02105 is the part number for the M20J gauge.

Lasar now has them in stock. 165 per unit I believe. I bought two for stock last month.

Which Rochester part number?

880024-009. It was shopped 11/7/2025.

That’s the Mooney part number. The Rochester part number is on the back side of the gauge.

Oh well I would have to go to the hangar and right now I have 1 inch of ice on my driveway, so it will be a while:)

You can special order these from Aircraft Spruce but minimum order is 10.  By the time you factor in shipping and special order price they come out to just under $70 each.

I tried Aircraft Spruce, but they got back to me after a day and said they couldn't supply the dials.

I next did a Google search for Rochester Sensors distributors, and the first name that came up was John M Ellsworth. I asked them to quote price, delivery and minimum order quantity for a 5404S02105 dial and they promptly responded with $59.55 ea, 4-6 week lead time and no minimum order quantity. They took my order for two with a credit card charge of $146.23 including tax and shipping and emailed an order verification. I'm kind of surprised it was that easy -- we'll see what happens come 4-6 weeks.

Good luck! About 20 years ago, I lost one of my wing gauges. I got a replacement from a Mooney place in Florida for about $50 (which at the time seemed ridiculously high). When it arrived, I saw it was a Rochester gauge. I went to the local Rochester operation here in Dallas. I showed it to the lady at the front desk and told her I wanted to buy another one. In about 5 minutes she returned and gave one to me. She said it wasn't worth having to do up the paperwork to sell it to me.

This was pre MS days if my memory serves. I contacted some of the Mooney folks who needed some as well, and put together an order for about 10 or so for various model Mooneys. Back to Rochester, and guess what? This a proprietary product for Mooney and we can not sell them to anyone but Mooney. I fussed and carried on, but to no avail.

My advice is that if they do sell them to you, grab up as many as they will let you have.

Maybe it’s like owner produced part. No problem making as many as you want for your aircraft, but the moment you try to sell one of them the FAA coming to get you.

As long as it's the identical part number from the manufacturer there should be no problem.
