M20J with IO360-A3B6D field overhaul done.  Now oil temp is too high.  Is it possible that oil lines could be hooked up backwards and would that cause oil to get too hot?

I think it is unlikely.  The oil cooler is just some passages with cooling fins attached.  I don’t think which way the oil flows matters.   I’d de cowl and take a look at things anyway.  It’s always a good idea to double check things and make sure everything is in its place.   Kinking an oil line because things are hooked up backwards could definitely reduce flow but I’d be surprised if that happened.

There is more friction during break in which equates to more heat.   How many hours since the field overhaul?

Vernatherum stuck?

+1 on this, more likely than oil cooler lines installed in reverse order. Lines are typically of specific lengths and hard to orient in a different way.  But agree with the rest - more information will be useful to get a better perspective.

  • break in - expect higher temps
  • oil level low
  • Bad sensor
  • bad gauge
  • Oil cooler fins, flush, etc
  • vernatherm
  • Outside air temp
  • baffles and seals
  • cowl flaps

I did read somewhere or was told by a IA that the lines going to the oil cooler does matter. Reverse your lines and see if that helps. Some thing about air bubbles and air bubbles rising.

There was a seminar a few years back where the guy explained it really well.  The oil filters need to fill from bottom to top, otherwise the oil dumps in the top of the cooler and then gets sucked out the bottom which leaves the oil cooler mostly filled with air.  Of course, that doesn’t do much for cooling the oil.
