Jim Peace Posted April 5 Report Posted April 5 I have a K&N wet filter... Just received the Tempest 7172 and it came with mounting hardware I am not familiar with. My old one uses screws....did I order the wrong one? how should I go about this? Will put it on next week.... Quote

It appears to be the right filter according to the application chart. I wouldn’t think replacing the airlocks with screws would violate the PMA. Air filters are on the preventative mx list. I’d remove the airlocks and install it with screws. You can probably use the same screws from your K&N. Don’t forget to make a logbook entry. 1 Quote

Why did you switch from the K&N? Just curious. Neal Quote
Jim Peace Posted April 7 Author Report Posted April 7 Most mechanics are to time pressed to clean it properly. Or at all. Even during annual. If they do clean it they use compressed air and destroy it. Removing it and soaking it and rewetting it never occurs. So this tempest one is supposed to be mechanic friendly. See what happens….. A64Pilot Posted April 15 Report Posted April 15 (edited) K&N’s also don’t filter very well, they have less restriction because they don’t filter as well. TANSTASFL It isn’t hard to properly service a K&N, but it can’t be done in one day as it takes 24 hours to completely dry before it’s oiled, plus it shouldn’t be dried in the sun as it’s cotton and that shrinks cotton, we used ones that were about 12 sq ft on the Thrush because for that application they were about the best thing going. You really don’t want to restrict the airflow to a turbine. Really cleaning and servicing a K&N is one of those things that’s so easy that it’s just foolish to pay someone else to do. ‘Pic is my Daughter years ago showing how to clean a Thrush intake air filter for a class I gave. Appears to be the right thing - equivalent part to the Donaldson P10-7122 filter that I use on my C model. I actually didn't realize a Tempest version existed (and it's $10 cheaper on Spruce!). I converted from a Brackett filter to Donaldson a while back - sorry I don't remember details of how mounting changed but it may be different if converting from a K&N. I think we just removed the plastic housing for the Brackett, and the receptacles for the bolts were already there. I seem to recall Donaldson claims their airflow rivals the K&N, much better than Brackett, and with better filtration than K&N without the oiling mess. Quote
