Jeff Uphoff Posted April 1 Report Posted April 1 I'm looking at Rosen visors for my 2000 M20R Ovation (built as an Ovation2, since converted to a 3). The Rosen page says: "Mooney Skyvisor System (fits Aircraft years 1968-1999)" Looking at the STC, which was updated in 2004, it lists the various covered models without any sort of end-date restriction, and M20R is included. So...by the STC, my Ovation looks covered, but...is there a fit issue of some sort with post-1999 aircraft? Thanks! --Up. Quote
exM20K Posted April 1 Report Posted April 1 Especially considering the panel height of the pre-GX or -DX Ovations, I'd go with the @DonMuncy units. I find the rosen's to be 20-30% too big in the G1000 Acclaim. Or, I suppose you could trim to fit to your satisfaction. -dan Quote

DonMuncy Posted April 1 Report Posted April 1 After LASAR quit producing their visors, I set out on a project to provide them. It took about 3 iterations before I got to my present version. They have been unchanged for the last 5 years, except when I began anodizing the aluminum parts black, a few years ago. A while back, someone humorously posted about "Visors by Muncy" and I kinda liked the name. If you have any interest send me a PM. Don Quote

But Rosen visors have an STC..Never understood how a replacement sunvisor requires a change to the Type Certificate . . . It mounts in the same holes. Just get Don's. No fuss, no muss. Quote

I know they have a loyal following, but I was very unimpressed with the Rosen visors in my J. Particularly for the J, perhaps, the visor goes into a pivot that is only a screw into the plane's frame. If I swung the visor forward, the screw tightened. If I swung the visor aft, the screw loosened. I was constantly getting bonked by a swinging visor on takeoff. I always had to have a screwdriver up front to tighten the screw after each use. I contacted Rosen to be sure there was not a missing part. I even sent the visors in to be confirmed they were the right parts. (I do applaud their custome service). It really needs a bearing or a Teflon bushing with some friction adjustment, so the screw is not torqued when you swing the visor. Note that the Mooney factory visor used the same mounting point, but the swing was in a bushing part and never torqued the mounting screw. Other issue is if you have the compass on the post instead of glare shield. The visor will hit the compass. So you must move it in all axes with every swing from stored position to sun blocking position. With my Ovation, I decided to just carry sunglasses rather than get another Rosen set. I think Muncy's are the right balance, based on the pics. Not too big, so they will not hit the compass. Quote

Second the design issue with "swinging" visor. I fixed that by replacing the original attachment bolts with bolts that have a knurled head. easily adjusted when positioning the visor and avoids the swing issue. Overall happy with the product after the fix. Edited April 2 by IvanP Quote
