All other things equal, price difference E vs J?

If all other things were equal (avionics, paint, tank condition, engine SMOH and quality of shop, etc.), how much more should a J be worth versus an E? (Ballpark figures, of course.) Is it 30% over the value of an E? 50%?

speed cost more.   Don't get stuck on purchase price of the plane.  You will spend much more money operating and maintaining the plane.   Newer planes within a group will have less ADs on them.   Also carburator vs fuel injected.

I can second the valuation guides from Jimmy, they have lots of detail (much more than Vref used to have when it came with AOPA) and I find them to reflect the fair market value for airframes that are turn-key ready. 

Here are the pre-201 and the J model guide posts. I'm pretty sure he gives them away to current Mooney owners for free, but I paid $35 for the first and $10 for the second when I was shopping.

Speed difference is probably not more than 5-10 kts, if even that. E and J are both fuel injected. The big difference for me would be the extra cabin space (maybe important? maybe not? I rarely fly with 3 people, most of the time it's me alone or me + 1). and perhaps the visibility from the bigger windshield of the J.

My two cents...  I was searching for an E 20 years ago when I found my F at my local airport.  The purchase was easy so I bought it.  The F has always been rated as a best buy in the Mooney universe (plenty of articles written).  Years ago, Russell Stallings (SWTA) told me that the big difference between an E and F, is you'd find yourself working the trim wheel a lot more in the E.  The same likely applies to a J (less pitchy than the E).  Why would I personally want a J even though my F has all the mods?  I wouldn't mind having a newer airframe and the J cowls are just cleaner.  Would I trade my F for a J?  Only if the J was 20 years younger (24 V '87 or newer).  How much more would that cost?  All things equal?  75% more.   Buy a J 10 years younger than my F, and you're in the 30 to 50% range now that the market has slowed and there's more inventory.  Just take a look at Trade a Plane and Controller.  Just don't forget about the taxes you'll throw down the drain with the transaction.

When I was looking I had my mind set on a E model cause I rarely fly with anyone in the back seat. I definitely wanted one with the 201 windshield mod and the flat instrument panel and 201 yokes were really nice as well. Better cowling, Newer airframe ect. I went and looked at a J about 8 months before I found mine and as soon as I sat in it I was like "Yep this is it" They do cost more but I think you get more. As to how much more they cost over a E model it's hard to say. I will say if you want a J get a J. I smile every time I fly mine, Hell I smile walking into the hangar and seeing it sitting there.

I am perfectly happy with my F but would have bought a J had the right one appeared.  As others have said, initial price difference is just not that significant in the scheme of total cost of ownership.  In seven years of ownership I've spent over 2X what the plane cost in OPEX!
