I have no idea what this means. But my guess is that you buy used equipment because you don't want to pay for new, you don't like to pay shop rates to get it fixed when it doesn't work, and you hope to get answers from Mooneyspace volunteers because it it free.

I find that most people who have that attitude have never run a business and have NO idea of all the costs involved.  And don't understand that the shop has to take in X over their cost for the job or they will not stay in business.

Quote the business.  As a customer I don't need to understand that.  Provide a quote that allows you to receive a profit you deem acceptable.  I as the customer will accept or reject your quote for service.

Boo friggin' hoo to shop margins by the way.

I mean, here’s the thing, call around for the job you want done and see what people are willing to do it for, if you can’t find anybody to install something used or work on somebody else’s wiring, that kind of says it all. You’re free to open up your own avionics shop or do your own troubleshooting which it appears you did and you fixed it so you know it worked out for the best I think. But I spent hours trying to troubleshoot something, such as a wire that was crimped with the insulation under it and wasn’t making  contact and we have to eat a lot of that. That stuff gets old.

Here's the thing.  I had the installer fix his work.  It was his wire.  It wass his pin.  He and I have developed a friendship during the process.  His initial work came in a $1000 high to the quote.  I gladly paid.  He got work over the winter that was flexible on a completion date.  This is a side business for him.  Others NOT ME cried on behalf of the avionics shops.  OTHERS went to areas that were not accurate and frankly added no value for me.  I significantly enhanced the safety function and enjoyment of my relatively new to my Mooney.  I found someone that I trust and stands behind his work.  He is a father and A&P and has years doing installations.  I have zero issues with shops that don't want to do installations of used equipment.   I have ZERO intereesst in opening up an electronics shop.  Contorted under a Mooney panel is not for me.  Glad I found someone locally that will.

They do, but then some people want to buy the hardware at a discount and have the installed for the same price as installing ones through the shop.

Not understanding that the shop makes a good bit of their income from the margins on the hardware.

O.K.  Thanks?  So this comes out in my "Any suggestions on what is wrong" thread as a public service announcement to others?  Well those "others" I am sure get an education from installers that likely don't need practice quoting.  I was up front and as I said in another thread, Installers are plenty busy enough in Iowa to name their price and say No.  Good for them.  Latest and greatest has never been my thing.  Quality, function and price are.  It has served me well thus far.  With thecomplexity of avionics installs and the proximity to existing older equipment and wiring I expect there to be hiccups in installs.  There were.  They appear to now be entirely fixed.  Until the next issue arises.  I am happy that the issue was found (relatively easily) and all my used equipment are now functioning well.

I DID buy a new EDM830 from AeroDon with this installation.  Bought a new Aera 660 from Garmin and a new Air Gizmo Mount.  New Lemo hardware and housings...Sometimes new is the way to go.  For me sometimes not.

This thread is getting kind of silly. Both those who want the latest and greatest and those who want a preowned bargin, benefit from one another. New buyers would not trade up nearly as often without a secondary market to allow them to recoup some value from the equipment they wish to replace.  Bargain buyers would be SOL without early adopters to supply the secondary market with desirable preowned equipment. It’s a symbiotic relationship and makes for a heathy market.

As for working on used equipment...all equipment is used equipment after the initial installation.
