Stetson20 Posted September 21, 2023 Report Posted September 21, 2023 Took off this morning for a short out and back from KHEG-KSSI (Jacksonville area to just north of Jekyll Island). On the way back, I noticed what appeared to be water dripping from my mag compass. It was the oil? (kerosene?) from the mag compass. One drip about every 3 minutes or so. Enough to bother/worry/annoy me Anyway I let my maintenance shop know. Any thoughts from the gallery? The compass was reading accurately, so on landing, I improvised with a sock and a walmart bag over the compass until the mechanic can take a look at it. TIA Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted September 21, 2023 Report Posted September 21, 2023 It will eventually stop dripping. It is certainly the diaphragm. They eventually crack with age. It is a $10 fix for a capable hangar elf. Or a $200 fix from an instrument shop. 2 Quote

TIA This is why Mooney stopped installaing the compass in the glareshield assembly and put it back on the post like it had been before. Kerosene leaking on top of your electronics is not a good thing. At least on the post you see it right away. Simple fix. https://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pnpages/10-08000.php 1 Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted September 21, 2023 Report Posted September 21, 2023 I've always noticed it as a wet spot on my right knee. 1 Quote
EricJ Posted September 22, 2023 Report Posted September 22, 2023 After having to reseal mine and then getting tired of the plastic mount getting broken too frequently, I replaced it with a dry compass. Have not missed the juice compass at all. 1 Quote
PT20J Posted September 22, 2023 Report Posted September 22, 2023 The previous owner installed a vertical card compass. I like it. And when I swung it, it was within 2deg all the way around the compass rose. Skip Quote
