Steve Dawson Posted June 9, 2023 Report Posted June 9, 2023 Has anyone installed these lights or are the lights shown in the attached file belong to someone here? I'd like to know what's needed to install them on a K legally. I have the original strobe/nav lights now but would like to add something like this to be able to add some night time visibility. https://flywat.com/collections/mooney-products/products/mooney-led-wingtip-recogntion-light wingtip Mooney.pdf Quote

Steve Dawson Posted June 10, 2023 Author Report Posted June 10, 2023 Yes, that's why I'm asking about adding them to regular wing tips. In the ad they mention they're available for other Mooneys as well as Bravo's. I should have been more descriptive. I'd like to increase the light in front of the plane. Secondly it would mean fabricating a plate inside the lens that would hold both this light as well as the combination strobe/nav lights. So how much do these lights illuminate the area in front of the plane, what was needed for fabrication to install them and what paperwork was needed to have these approved. Quote

When you say "regular wingtips" are you referring to older airplanes like an M20C? The Whelen lights you linked to above are a direct replacement for the projector bulbs in later airplanes. I don't know if they put out more light, but they don't melt the lens, and they use less electricity. Anyone who has left their recognition lights on after landing has likely deformed the lenses or put holes completely through the lenses. I'm not aware of any mod that would add recognition lights to an airplane that didn't come with them. Quote

PT20J Posted June 10, 2023 Report Posted June 10, 2023 I installed these on my M20J. Takes an hour or less per side. I added a MaxPulse to make them wigwag. They are brighter than the original bulbs, but not nearly as bright as G3 LED landing lights. I asked the tower if they could see them during daylight and they could not until I was about a mile away and I was pointed directly at them. If you have the recognition lights, they are a drop in replacement. If not, you would need to source the parts to add the recognition lights first. If you have wing mounted landing and taxi lights I would not go to the trouble to change out the wingtips to add these if you don't currently have the wingtip recognition lights. The cost/benefit isn't there. Unless you have a few thousand dollars to burn. Skip 1 Quote
