jrwilson Posted April 23, 2023 Report Posted April 23, 2023 Anybody have an idea what I could get to replace just the strobe light with an LED? thanks! Quote
Pinecone Posted April 23, 2023 Report Posted April 23, 2023 @OSUAV8TER James sells Whelen lights and hangs out here. My M20K is getting the combined LED strobe and nav light. Orion 650E. And getting the Orion 500 for the tail, so it will be strobe and nav also. 2 Quote
PeteMc Posted April 23, 2023 Report Posted April 23, 2023 I did the same thing as @Pinecone did with my wingtip and tail lights/strobes. I also switch the beacon light to LED at the same time. My plane is in for interior right now at I69 where @OSUAV8TER is based, and once my Recognition Lights are changed out, I'll be all LED. 1 Quote

What is (or will be) your solution for the always-dim gear annunciators? Quote

I haven't fixed/modified it yet. I've heard about one fix, but really haven't dug into if there are multiple options, and if there are, which one is the best. Maybe @OSUAV8TER has heard of a good fix on that too? Edited April 23, 2023 by PeteMc 1 Quote

According to a different topic, he was unaware of the problem until recently. Please share if/when you solve this. Quote

ArtVandelay Posted April 23, 2023 Report Posted April 23, 2023 What is (or will be) your solution for the always-dim gear annunciators?I think best solution is to use a switch, dim or brighten as necessary. Quote

ArtVandelay Posted April 23, 2023 Report Posted April 23, 2023 And that would switch a resistor in or out of the circuit? As I understand it, when lights are off a wire connected to lights is basically grounded through the incandescent lights, which have some resistance, but allows full current to flow. When on, that wire is driven to +12v, so no extra current passes through the gear down light. So connecting that wire to a switch, which connected to ground (through a resistor) should do the same when on, and not when off. 1 Quote

Unfortunately, there are no stand alone LED strobe lights. As others have mentioned, it may mess with the dimming function of your landing gear indicator and a resistor in the line should fix that. I carry the Orion 650E on my website at https://www.gallagheraviationllc.com/WAT-14V-Green-6501GE-Wingtip-Light_p_14.html and https://www.gallagheraviationllc.com/WAT-14V-Red-6501RE-Wingtip-Light_p_168.html Quote

Pinecone Posted April 23, 2023 Report Posted April 23, 2023 In my case, I have the rear tips lights that will stay halogen for now. So gear lights should be fine. There is a circuit in a thread here on MS that takes care of it if you want to replace the tips lights with LED 1 Quote

But not sure if there are LED replacement bulbs that will also resolve the issue. Hopefully someone here will chime in with options. Quote
Pinecone Posted April 24, 2023 Report Posted April 24, 2023 One more time. Here are the previous threads with information on how to deal with all LED position lights. Quote

We did the Orion wingtips at Annual. Looks like we’ll do the tail at next opportunity. Quote
Pinecone Posted November 3, 2024 Report Posted November 3, 2024 I put them on my M20K 252. LOVE them. When I had my avionics done, I had the shop install a wire to synch the strobes. While studies say that random is better, I like them flashing all at the same time. I also had the run a wire to the tail for the tail nav light. My plane has the wingtip rear nav lights. Quote
