At my last job, no one asked and no one checked. So I flew a few times (there were only a few times the trip justified it) and got reimbursed for the backup refundable commercial airfare.

This is the way to do it if you can. Better to ask forgiveness than permission in most cases.
Corporate legal decision making has always been interesting to me. I know of a number of people who've been in automobile accidents driving to and from meeting and work related events. Corporate liability is never a concern under those conditions.  Furthermore I know of at least three DUI cases that were the result of employees leaving work sponsored events where alcohol was provided by the company; one of which resulted in an accident that took out two parked cars. The risk of letting an employee fly his own plane seems minuscule next to providing alcohol for hundreds of employees at work event

Yeah, but I would not recommend going against stated company policy.

Some companies are also worried about reputation risk. That was a big part of the reason for the prohibition at the last company I worked. We had already been called out by Congress for "excesses".

Well, it's a good practice to fly coach when you are subpoenaed to a hearing :)

Especially when the hearing is about “bailing out your company?” :)

And, let the Congresscritter that issued the subpoena use the company Gulfstream to get to your hearing:D

It would be dependent on pilot experience, how many pilots, does your employer carry work comp, etc.  I'll send you a message.

Is this something that I would (or could) buy or my employer?

My company requires our drone subcontractors to carry $2M of liability insurance.  What kind of increase in yearly insurance would that look like on a current $1M policy?

Your employer would have to buy a non-owned aircraft insurance policy, but you could offer to add your employer as an Additional Insured.  Especially if you didn't carry passengers when on company travel, you wouldn't have to worry about increasing or removing your passenger sublimits.
