Sad to report the death of Sherman Smoot. He was killed flying a modified Yak-11 in prep for the air races. He was the owner of the FBO at KPRB which his father started. He grew up steeped deeply in aviation and did just about everything you could do. Fighter pilot, airline pilot, air race pilot, FBO owner. I used to fly into PRB frequently and enjoyed his friendship. We lost a good guy.

Very sad news indeed , Sherman was testing a new engine in Czech Mate when he lost oil pressure and power .  He was the favorite in the Unlimited class this year .  A very nice guy and an exceptional pilot.  Tail winds Sherman

I flew a Yak-11 that had an R-2000 installed   We did not switch to high blower, but it did not lack for power.

With twice again the HP and clipped wings Czech Mate must have been impressive indeed.
