I was kicking around the idea of selling my old 172m, I'm guessing I would get enough from it to look for a $30-45k C or E model, wondering what the market is like on them or is it inflated like everything else and not worth spending time on trying to find one.

The market is insane, but it's generally been my observation that a C172 will sell for twice a comparably-equipped vintage Mooney. The market for "the plane I did my training in" is insane.

While the prices for Mooneys has gone up, it’s nothing like the what 172 prices have done. Look at what 172’s are bringing then look at Mooneys, you’ll probably put some money in your pocket and go 50mph faster

Looking back 20 years….

I bought a pretty worn out M20C for 34amu… with a northstar Loran and a couple of old Narco radios…

C172 and P150 and M20C were evenly priced…

There wasn’t a good or viable way to learn about how good an M20C really is….

or how to go for a flight in one…

or how to talk to a mechanic that actually works on one….

So… if an M20C is half the price of a C172…

Go get a really nice M20C…

And be happy you didn’t follow the other crowd…

30amu today…. Isn’t going to buy a nice M20C…

There is value in doing a lease back for the 172, lots of flight schools use them and love them.  They are a great plane and could be less overall operation cost if you don’t mind sharing and cleaning up after renters.  If you consider holding on to it. Sale price is definitely to your advantage if you want to sell

I bought my C in 2018 for around $35K.  It was very basic and since then I’ve upgraded to ADS -B in and out, Garmin 650, JPI and dual G5s.  There are a few more things to do before I get to the cosmetics (paint and interior) but the journey has been worth the investment. Each incremental step has made my connection to the plane grow.  If you are looking for a ready for an AOPA magazine cover model, $35K is a before picture.  If your timeline and budget allow for incremental upgrades, you’ll be happy with $40K for a “good” C.

just my thoughts.
