Arthur Posted January 16, 2022 Report Posted January 16, 2022 Any one with similar situation. Reputable maintenance shop, but with no M20K experience. What would be a reasonable number of labor hours for removal of engine and prop, reinstall after major overhaul. Aircraft has turboplus intercooler and Merlyn waste gate. Quote
kortopates Posted January 16, 2022 Report Posted January 16, 2022 impossible to say. it will have a lot to do with the quality or thoroughness of the engine overhauler. The better, more expensive ones will ship back the engine much more complete ready to install while some discounters will leave it it to the installer to install all the accessories, including the turbo, aftercooler, hoses, mags etc. Those differences represent a lot of hours and every installer will need to re-install baffling and most of time it will need a lot of work to repair or replace. Most need engine mount work done too.Personally, I’ve seen as much as another 50% of the budget overall cost go to completing the engine installation and additional repairs.Everyone is different and some owners may contribute a lot by working on baffling repairs and engine mount repairs/refinishing while the engine is out.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1 Quote
Guest Posted January 16, 2022 Report Posted January 16, 2022 I could see someone spending 100 hours doing it. Much depends on what all needs to be done. Repairing or replacing metal baffles, baffle sealing tapes, removing and refinishing the engine mount structure, removing and shipping out the exhaust system, cleaning the firewall, repairi;g cracks in the firewall. Does your engine have additional systems like an engine monitor, Tanis or Reiff pre-heater, these take time to remove from the engine before shipping and reinstalling them on the replacement engine. Does your cowl need any repairs etc. Many of these items aren’t part of the engine but do take up loads of additional time. Is your installer going to motor your engine over on the starter to establish oil pressure? If so he has to remove and install spark plugs, if he’s going to use an oil pressure pot, he has to plumb it to the engine and then remove it afterward, more time spent that not all installers do. PT20J Posted January 16, 2022 Report Posted January 16, 2022 Not a turbo, but for my M20J it took 80 hours for my IA (with some help from me) to R&R the engine and prop. We didn't remove the mount and we kept the old baffles with a couple of minor repairs but installed new GeeBee seals. And, Rich knew his way around an engine and worked pretty expeditiously. Taking it apart is pretty quick, but putting it all back together takes more time than you might imagine. Skip Quote

N201MKTurbo Posted January 17, 2022 Report Posted January 17, 2022 It took me about 4 weeks to put my engine back on my plane. That was working about 25 hours a week. Mine is quite a bit more involved than a stock 201 because of the turbo system. Quote
shawnd Posted January 22, 2022 Report Posted January 22, 2022 I will be going through mine soon-ish. Dreading it if the estimates will be ~80 hours. But it will be done right and can't beat the peace of mind knowing proper procedures were followed. Quote
