GingerDan Posted December 17, 2021 Report Posted December 17, 2021 Has anyone replaced the old Edo-Aire governor with a Woodward governor? My mechanic says the current control arm bracket doesn’t match up so I spoke with Dan at Lasar and ordered the bracket he said I needed. Mechanic received it today and it’s the same bracket as the old one. Mechanic is aware of the 6 screws and the ability to turn the case but he said every configuration doesn’t work. The Woodward is part # B210-345. Dan said he’d send me part #660117-000. The new one says 660117-001 but I doubt the 001 is a big difference. We’re going on a month here trying to figure this out. It’s driving me nuts. I’m a new owner and the plane is at a remote airport - governor quit on us on the flight home. What I can’t seem to figure out is if that specific woodward is the correct part number for my plane and I’m more confused because when I spoke with the shop that replaced the old one (Aircraft Accessories of Oklahoma) and explained how it doesn’t fit the bracket, he said he could make me a different case for the governor. Is that even a thing? We’ve tried rotating the case and even putting the bracket on backwards. He said, he’s tried everything and they just don’t line up. I chose the Woodward because I was told it was a “direct replacement” for the Edo-Aire and the PCU would require significant modifications. The PCU dealer told me that I’d be better off going with the Woodward if my mechanic hasn’t done a PCU conversion before and since I don’t plan on keeping the plane for a significant amount of time the extra cost wasn’t worth it. I’d love to get my plane home someday. Any help is appreciated. I attached picture of the Woodward and brackets. Quote
GingerDan Posted December 17, 2021 Author Report Posted December 17, 2021 That one is a little hard to answer because I am not with the plane. He said that it installs onto the engine fine but the control arm bracket doesn’t line up. That’s the best answer I can give. Quote
GingerDan Posted December 19, 2021 Author Report Posted December 19, 2021 For what it’s worth, we are having the shop take back the woodward and send us a McCauley. That should be a direct replacement for the EdoAire so we’ll see what happens. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted December 19, 2021 Report Posted December 19, 2021 I've never done it, but the governor shop told me you can remove the six screws and rotate the top plate to properly clock the control arm. Quote

I have heard the same but the prop shop I called for advice (Dan at Lasar referred me to) said that the Woodward cannot be rotated as you described. The guys who sold me the Woodward said that the McCauley and the Edo-Aire mounting holes line up. I don't fully trust them so we'll see. I was told that the Edo-Aire and Woodward are basically identical in shape and the control cable bracket should fit without modification and it doesn't fit at all so... Quote
carusoam Posted December 20, 2021 Report Posted December 20, 2021 GD, Help yourself out a bit… What plane do you have, what engine is in it? It is hard for people to lend advice, when they don’t know what you have…. You are asking about specific gov hardware details… when you might not have the right gov that is best for you… There is a more common Governor used as a replacement lately… You might see if that is a solution…. As a next research step. PCU 5000 (?) PP thoughts only, not a mechanic… -a- Quote
GingerDan Posted December 20, 2021 Author Report Posted December 20, 2021 Just now, carusoam said: There is a more common Governor used as a replacement lately… You might see if that is a solution…. As a next research step. PCU 5000 (?) -a- I am aware of the PCU5000 as an option. With the modifications needed it would double my repair cost. If the plane were at my home base and I had long term plans with it I’d make the switch. Right now, I haven’t even gotten the plane home from purchasing it over a month ago. Quote
carusoam Posted December 20, 2021 Report Posted December 20, 2021 Yikes…. Lets get some detail added to your avatar area… If you are using a small screen, it is a little more challenging…. But you have access to all the places to leave the info… To get more, decent help… Clicking on the right icon should open a page to add the data… Know that many screens show this data easily… not everyone is looking at a small screen… If they are, your details are only a click away… -a- Quote
carusoam Posted December 20, 2021 Report Posted December 20, 2021 Let’s assume for a moment… You have the right Governor for your plane… Lets list the details for your… plane… engine… govenor… Then we can find the people, the mechanics, and users of what you have…. And anyone we may know at Woodward… Rich above is a great resource…. We have a few others available in the other times when Rich is not around… Getting this far shouldn’t take a month…. It should be pretty easy to get a solid plan together…. Clearing up the other detail…. Is the plane somewhere between the old owner’s airport and the one you want to have it call home? Best regards, -a- Quote
carusoam Posted December 20, 2021 Report Posted December 20, 2021 Make no assumptions when it comes to part numbers and their extensions… The difference between -000 and -001 can be a night and day difference… depending on what it is referring too… Part for a Left turning engine vs right turning engine… Or could refer to having an extra hole you don’t need…. The part number has a revision number as well… Rev K. when you put one part on top of the other… it kind of reveals some differences… -a- Quote
carusoam Posted December 20, 2021 Report Posted December 20, 2021 We have a really good prop shop around here… he hasn’t missed being helpful…. For fine details like this… Prop shops and Governor expertise are closely related… Best regards, -a- 2 Quote
