atpdave Posted October 8, 2021 Report Posted October 8, 2021 My Whelen (now WAT) wing strobe power supply in my Ovation2 has failed, so I will be converting the wing lighting to LED soon, followed by the tail lighting. I'd like to keep the 7-pin tail strobe connector that hangs in the space between the tailcone and the empennage for the new wiring, but I can't find any info online for this obsolete part, particularly for the pin and socket contacts in it. The electrical equipment hardware chart shows the connector part numbers to be PL07B PLUG, 7 PIN DEUTSCH BVD06E0207SN CRIMP SOCKETS (A/R) DEUTSCH CPP0602B07S RC07B RECEPTACLE, 7 PIN DEUTSCH BVD04E0207PN CRIMP PINS (A/R) DEUTSCH BVD-20P My online searches of the above PNs come up with nothing useful. This connector was used on Ovation SNs 29-0170 through 29-0475 and maybe a little later. By at least 29-0512 Mooney went back to a 4-pin circular connector for the M20R but I want 5 pins (I've read the LED wiring doesn't need shielding but I prefer to keep it). I'm hoping the contacts are standard dimensions and specs (mil spec?) and just have a new part number. I'd appreciate any insight anyone can share on this.
KSMooniac Posted October 8, 2021 Report Posted October 8, 2021 I used Deutsch connectors when I converted to LED lights, replacing the old Molex connectors. I would imagine all of the pins and sockets are common within size groups. Can you pull up a current connector kit and look at the pins?Worst case, maybe you can buy a new connector kit and just replace the whole thing... Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk 1
Aerodon Posted October 8, 2021 Report Posted October 8, 2021 Ebay is a good source for discontinued items. Plug those numbers in and several come up. Aerodon
carusoam Posted October 8, 2021 Report Posted October 8, 2021 A good time to invite the Whelen guy to stop by…. See if he has any additional info to consider. @OSUAV8TER Best regards, -a-

I’ve always used Ladd Inc. for deutsch connector parts. The phone reps are usually spot on with correct info.

I suspect the pins and sockets are standard but it is confusing as there are hundreds of pin and socket numbers and I still can't find an equivalent Deutsch replacement. I am not interested in using the old connector if it involves more than buying a few contacts. On 10/8/2021 at 11:21 AM, Aerodon said: Ebay is a good source for discontinued items. Like you said, some connector shells are available there but no info on contacts. I appreciate the suggestion. Their website has a lot of info. I may pursue it but I've already spent too much time looking into this. Paul Maxwell suggested using a 9-pin AMP high density connector kit that is not much larger than the existing one, so I will move on and use that instead. It is inexpensive, just a little more than the typical price of Deutsch contacts alone. I'll update this topic if I get more info. Thanks so much for your input.
