I can’t understand the price disparity between Bonanzas and Ovations. 2 airplanes serving the exact same market. I bought a 2002 Ovation 2 with TKS and A/C. $260,000 last September. Always hangared. 2485TT. 485 hrs on a factory new engine in 2015. New interior in 2015. I saw an ad for a 1999 A36 Bonanza with similar times no TKS and no AC for $369,000. That’s $109,000 more for a lesser equipped airplane. Is the Ovation an incredible deal or are Bonanzas overpriced?

Cost per seat, the Bonanza is cheaper.

Ovation - $65,000/seat

A36 - $61,500/seat

No ones going anywhere in the Bonanza if there’s icing! :)

But you can't put an adult in the far back seat, at least my friend with an A-36 never did--I either rode up front or in the rear-facing club seat with lots of leg room. So use 5 seats for the Bo, the price becomes unattractive at $73,800 per Useful seat. Oh, and watch the CG as fuel burns off, because it moves to the rear rather a lot . . . .

The fun about buying a Mooney…

You are getting a special machine, built to the highest standards, flys like magic…

But sells at a discount…

We pretty much have to be an educated consumer to realize that speed and efficiency is what we want…

Big brand name that even your mother can recognize doesn’t make the plane 100amu better…

So… it took me a while to figure that out…. The C172, P150, and M20C all were in the same ball park price wise…

I took the path less traveled by… that has made all of the difference… - R. Frost

A36s are very desirable due to the seats, space, and loadability with the big side door.    Bicycle(s)?   No problem.   There are a lot of practical differences like this that matter to a lot of buyers.

If you fly 1 to 2 people long distance to paved airstrips, the Ovation, bravo, and acclaim are the best XC certified airplanes along with the TTX, 400, amd 350. However there is way more support behind the bo. More parts. The Bo has the TAT available, which is much more sophisticated and more advanced. If you want to fly off airport, the Oleo struts are again way better. Ive taken my ovation off airport, but a bonanza is simply a non event off airport. Then 6 seats. 400lbs gross weight increase, tip tanks, and way more. Then a useful lpad thats actually useable if you have a turbo, tip tanks, o2, ac and TKS. Ovations that have o2, ac, and tks usually dont even have 800 lbs of useful load.

I think this is what it comes down to. I've flown Mooney C, J, K, and R, and Bonanza 33, 35, and 36. The 36 isn't really the same target market as the Ovation due to size and seats. A 4-seat 33 with an 550 STC performs almost as well as an Ovation but feels like sitting in a living room. Passengers like that.

I think there are other factors which go into the market. Mooneys tend to be viewed as cult airplanes requiring "special" pilot skills, a viewpoint Mooney pilots tend to foster. Bonanzas are viewed as mainstream. Example:

Landing a Mooney: "you better be super precise and exact on airspeed or you will float forever and probably land on the nosewheel!"

Landing a Bonanza: "The worlds easiest airplane to land. You have to try hard to screw up the landing."

And I'm sure continued concerns over the viability of a Mooney company don't help one bit!

But are you comparing last years market (your purchase) to this years market (the bonanza)?  The economy of things with engines is booming right now.  A real sellers market.  I bet your Ovation would be more expensive this year.
