Garmin 345 is it supposed to work this way?

I have a garmin 345 and 530w that i use an ipad to Bluetooth to and get my position and traffic feed to foreflight. The other day while trouble shooting a background hum through the radios i decided to turn off the 530 in flight to see if the noise would go away. I knew i would also lose my gps map and traffic on the 530 but did not realize i also lost it on my ipad as well. The 345 started flashing es1040 and something else I can’t remember now. I used to keep a bad elf in my flight bag but stopped with the ease of pulling it from the airplane. Guess i will make sure to keep that in the airplane. Does the 345 loose traffic as well?  I checked FlightAware on the ground and my position was always reported, i know the 345 has a gps internally i just assumed it could feed the position to the ipad as well. Apparently not.

Not all 345s gave integrated GPS. If you have a compatible GPS source, such as the 530, it'll use that instead, so when you turn the 530 off, the 345 has no location information to give you traffic. That's my guess.

You sure your -345 has the internal gps?  Mine doesn’t.  The model with gps costs more, so did you really opt for that if you already had a waas gps?

It will still output your transponder code which could be used by flightaware for position.

The GTX 345 needs GPS source for position and AHRS drift correction. If there is a panel mount GPS, it can be the source. This is the most common configuration. The GTX 345 can be ordered with an internal GPS in which case it will have it's own GPS antenna and will not need an external GPS connection.

Ah thanks. Didn’t know the 345 could come without the internal gps and just use the 530w. That makes sense and I’m sure that is what the PO did as i would have too to save cost.
