Because the EDM900 in our M20C is installed more than 8" from the center of the instrument "T", we have the remote annunciator light (RAL) installed in the panel right above the AI.  Well I think I need a new one.  It stopped working on my recent trip out west.

Tonight I unplugged the 1/8" stereo headphone jack that they use to connect it to the EDM900.   I used a Fluke multimeter to check continuity on all combinations of the three contacts, and tested both polarities.  Figuring that it is just two LED's, there should be very low resistance between one contact (grnd) and the other two contacts.  Negative.   No current flow detected in any of all configurations tested.

I've never dealt with JPI tech support, but what I've read here on MS is that it isn't "super whoopy".   I think I bought it from South Coast Avionics.  Any suggestions where I can get a replacement?  P/N 790547.

Thx.

Fred

Aircraft Spruce is a JPI dealer but I don't see this part listed. However there's a Remote Alarm Light for the JPI EDM-350 (experimental) that looks like the same thing.

Yes, looking at the photo it does look the same...    I can almost make the P/N out on the photo, but it is a bit too small.   Maybe I'll call Spruce and ask them to tell me that info in the morning.

Niiice.   Thanks.  The power of MS comes through again!

In another thread (on micro-switch based lift indicator?) one of our fellow MS denizens was talking about markup.   This unit is a dual-color LED (probably 5 cents in bulk wholesale) wired to a male 1/8 stereo headset connector (5 cents) with some heat shrink.   If made offshore on a contract basis cost < 0.001 AMU materials plus 0.002 AMU labor, selling on Spruce for 0.082 AMU.  That's pretty decent markup.  Not complaining, just noting.

Ordered.

Better than a $4000 fuel cap from Lasar.

JPI Support e-mailed this drawing today showing how their Remote Annunciator Light (RAL) is wired.   Sure enough, the way I tested it the diodes are fried.  Odd.

Assuming this is not a joke?   Machined from platinum alloy?  Does it unscrew itself, swipe your card, fill your a/c with fuel, then put itself back on?

I think @carusoam is probably right- decimal place slip.

This analysis of overpriced parts is well written:

Update.  It turns out that my Remote Alarm Light (RAL) is not the problem.   Drat.  That was the simple option and too good to be true I guess.  The only problem with testing the RAL is me.  I need to pay attention and set the multimeter on diode test not ohms.   So something is wrong with the unit.  Contacted JPI and requested a return RMA.   Received the following reply:

Per tech the unit does not need to come in.  We will be doing it remotely.  For your reference, the RMA number is xxxx.  Tech will email you in the order that your RMA was received.  Please allow some time.

That's vague.  Some time?  Anybody dealt with this before?   Are they going to have me take/send it to a local avionics shop?  That was Wednesday, I've not heard from them since.

BTW I asked them to do three things:

1.  Repair non-functioning RAL.

2. Remove intermediate RPM red arc since we now have a Top Prop with no RPM restrictions on a C model.

3.  Increase fuel pressure red-line to 8 psi as per Lycoming O-360 engine specifications (gotta try).

Not sure how this stuff is gonna happen remotely.   Yes, item 3 is a Hail Mary, but I'm tired of the red-light distraction on takeoff warning me about a B.S. non-problem for fuel pressure of 6.1 p.s.i.

Sounds like JPI hasn’t recovered from the Corona virus yet...

See if @Jeev is around...   (He often speaks fluent JPI). :)

Remote update?

With an RMA?

Return Materials Authorization...  (commercial term for send it back, we’ll track it using this number)

Why would they give you that, and not expect you to send it in..?

Does it have an internet connection, WiFi, blue tooth, cell service, USB plug...?

PP thoughts only, not a businessman...

Best regards,

It has a USB port, so maybe capability to flash something to ROM.  Although I suspect a hardware problem given that the RAL isn't working, while everything else is fine.   I'll post updates as the situation develops.

I recently contacted them about an issue with my 930.  They wanted to try a software fix first, but they had me put in an rma as well and then emailed me the software and instructions.  It didn’t fix my issue, but that seems to be their method of getting your info.

Not the same as your remote light, but I’ve had trouble with the RAD on my 930 the whole time I’ve had it.  I replaced it once with no effect and the unit was back at jpi once.  It usually displays rpm and mp, but when there’s an alert, it goes blank instead of showing it.  Seems software ish, but I’ve given up trying to work that one.

They have had two different RADs.

Long story but I bought an early 930 to get converted to the specs for my Mooney and they ending up replacing it before I installed it with a new style 930. My installer used the old style RAD and it would cut out constantly. I have the new style RAD now and it seems to be working great.

Interesting.  Is it the same size and connection?

I didn’t even realize there was a new vs old style 930 until recently, but mine was installed in 2012, so I’d guess it’s old?  I tried a “new” RAD in 2014.  Did you get yours more recently?

Same size and connection. I just bought my new RAD in March.

I’m sure you’ve gotten this resolved by now, but I have a RAL that doesn’t self test red and yellow as stated in the manual and showed no alert when I had my recent over voltage and alternator drop out without the RAL lighting up red or yellow.

Just wondering what your outcome was.

Yeah-  I had to replace the RAL too.   As I recall, first indication that something was wrong - the RAL stopped working.   I bought a new RAL from AS and installed it, but it didn't work either.   I sent the unit  to JPI.  They replaced a board and removed the yellow arc off the prop, all at no charge.  Installed the new RAL.  It worked.

I think there should be an easy way to test the RAL. It shows it to be a 5 volt led, so USB power should be a perfect test for both polarities.
I spoke to one of their techs yesterday and when I explained the self test that is explained in the manual, he sounded quite surprised. I asked why the surprise and he said he hasn’t been there very long. :D

A related issue I’ve got is no RED alarm with Low Oil Pressure. This is #1 on the alarm list and should be a red alert at low idle. I get yellow, no red. I’m hoping to get that call back today.
