Rusty Trombone Posted December 5, 2020 Report Posted December 5, 2020 Hello all, I’m new to Mooneys, MS, and I bought an F. Been reading a lot and learning...smart people here. Break Break Ive tried the search engines for a couple of hours, no joy. Anybody recall the name of the airport out west that’s out in the desert cliffs, private and has rooms you can rent that are either right next to the cliff or in it? It’s driving me nuts. I wanted to fly there with my old airplane, but never got around to it before selling. Respectfully, RT Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted December 5, 2020 Report Posted December 5, 2020 Are you thinking of Grand Canyon Caverns? https://gccaverns.com They have an airport and you can park your plane in front of your room. Quote
Rusty Trombone Posted December 5, 2020 Author Report Posted December 5, 2020 No, but that looks cool to. This is way out in the middle of nowhere. Some guy just built the thing and you have to call him to get in. I might have seen it in the STOL blogs since I had a 182. But I remember it was a long runway, just remote. Quote
carusoam Posted December 5, 2020 Report Posted December 5, 2020 See if @MooneyMitch is familiar... Be prepared to converse... he is handy with a trumpet... Welcome aboard RT! -a- 1 Quote
Rusty Trombone Posted December 5, 2020 Author Report Posted December 5, 2020 Found it. Called Caveman, UT68. 1 Quote

I think it would be sporty for an approach in a Mooney. Looks like a strong cliff face on the opposite side of the river. It may not be that big of a deal to fly the river and land but I'd like to see it done in something other than a bush plane. The sandbar looks nice as well. Quote
Rusty Trombone Posted December 5, 2020 Author Report Posted December 5, 2020 Don’t know. Don’t really know the Mooney yet. I remembered it paved, and it hurts just thinking about dents in my H stab. Might rent a 172. Quote
carusoam Posted December 5, 2020 Report Posted December 5, 2020 Gravel surface... Might be better for a rented prop... https://www.airnav.com/airport/UT68 -a- Quote
jrwilson Posted December 5, 2020 Report Posted December 5, 2020 So I read the article on caveman and I’m confused... is it an active hotel? Do people actually stay there? Seems like there are hotel rooms and amenities but for a possible future venture? Quote
Rusty Trombone Posted December 5, 2020 Author Report Posted December 5, 2020 A really cool place to go is L41, marble canyon. It’s on Navajo land, but you can just land on it. Just re-paved too. There is a hotel, Marble Canyon Lodge 150 meters from where you park. Then, you can get guided trout fishing or just walk out to a neat bridge to see the Colorado River and at sunset these HUGE condors land on bridge to sleep. Star viewing is crazy good. 2 Quote
Rusty Trombone Posted December 5, 2020 Author Report Posted December 5, 2020 Yea, you can go there. Just call the owner, number is on airport information on airnav. Quote
Brian E. Posted December 5, 2020 Report Posted December 5, 2020 The approach to Caveman doesn't; look bad at on the video at all. Thanks for sharing. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted December 5, 2020 Report Posted December 5, 2020 I’ve landed at Marble canyon, it is a no brainer the hotel is right across the street. If I recall, the dining room closes after everybody is fed so don’t be late. Went hiking at Lee’s Ferry and a slot canyon about 3 miles south that goes down to the river. Absolutely beautiful hikes. I've also landed at Marble Canyon, many years ago. Parked the plane, got out onto the wing, and the plane started rolling with me standing on the wing. Fortunately, it stopped short of hitting the fence. I walked over to the lodge for fry bread and took a look at the bridge. To be honest, I could have used a beer to celebrate the plane not hitting the fence, but I didn't have eight hours to wait before flying again. I recommend Marble Canyon. I also recommend setting the parking brake when parking at unfamiliar fields. 1 1 Quote
Davidv Posted December 19, 2020 Report Posted December 19, 2020 All I read was "Dates", "Private Strip", "Hotel Room" and "Cliff Face". Sounds like a pretty typical night for Ted Kennedy. 1 Quote
BKlott Posted January 1, 2021 Report Posted January 1, 2021 I had some interesting dates in my youth, but none that were that interesting. Quote
