Nukemzzz Posted October 12, 2020 Report Posted October 12, 2020 While refreshing the interior I’m ditching the ashtrays. This leaves a square hole in the wall just to the left of the pilot yoke. What should I put here? Any creative ideas out there? In the rear this was used for the headset jacks but I don’t need that up front i could put a placard but won’t be able to read it. Would some sort or mount work here? Any cool pen holders or something you guys can think of? Quote
Hank Posted October 12, 2020 Report Posted October 12, 2020 I put a battery-operated red LED light there, from Spruce. ~$30, I think. Works well, rather bright. 1 or 2 AAAs. My ashtray is now on the shelf. 1 Quote
gsxrpilot Posted October 12, 2020 Report Posted October 12, 2020 A couple of USB charging ports would be useful. 5 Quote
David Lloyd Posted October 12, 2020 Report Posted October 12, 2020 A velco pad to hold a couple vecro wrapped flashlights and pens/pencils. 3 Quote
jakearey Posted October 15, 2020 Report Posted October 15, 2020 You could put the ashtray back and just use it while you smoke inside of your 10 cubic feet cabin! Lmao 2 Quote
M20F Posted October 15, 2020 Report Posted October 15, 2020 How can you use your cigar lighter then? If it isn’t IMC in the cabin, you aren’t living the full Executive life. 5 Quote
Nukemzzz Posted October 16, 2020 Author Report Posted October 16, 2020 It’s really hard to believe that people used to smoke in these planes. I’ve never been in a small plane when I didn’t smell just a little gasoline fumes. Lol 1 Quote

Lol They weren't quite as old when so many people smoked in them, so they probably weren't leaking quite as much. 1 Quote

My dad‘s plane went non-smoking in the mid 70s after a passenger’s burning cigarette end landed on the carpet. I wasn’t there, but I’m sure it was exciting. Quote
neilpilot Posted October 17, 2020 Report Posted October 17, 2020 My flying club back in the 70s had placards installed on our 3 Cs: No Smoking First 2 Rows 1 1 2 Quote
Hector Posted October 17, 2020 Report Posted October 17, 2020 I have the ashtray 3 LED replacement from Spruce. Just an emergency 3red LEDs in caseSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Yetti Posted October 18, 2020 Report Posted October 18, 2020 The grumpy IA was looking for a place to put the panel mounted LED in a 182. I suggested replace the ash trays on the A pillar. Quote
RobertGary1 Posted October 20, 2020 Report Posted October 20, 2020 Watch those holes. I had a DPE refuse a checkride in an Aztec because there was a hole. Apparently there aren't supposed to be holes in panels. -Robert Quote

It was like a ritual after the gear came up light a cig. On landing over the fence the cig got set down. I was flying a Cessna 140 and it was suggested I bring a stogie or two. More unbelievable to me was that at the time wearing headsets had just become standard. Incredible to image that when most of our Mooneys were built people used hand mics for ATC and no headphones. -Robert 1 Quote

The DPE that administered my Instrument check ride back in 1990 wanted to smoke. I said not in my Mooney. He then gave me an ultimatum - either I allow him to smoke or I would need to find another DPE. I relented, and did pass that check ride. 1 1 Quote

I don’t see how anyone could understand an overhead speaker in a single engine GA plane...and of course, none of us ever had any hearing protection. At the time CB radios were common and he talked a lot with truckers on channel 19 on the interstate. Maybe with practice you can make sense of the garbled mess...I have a hard enough time understanding folks at a restaurant table because of background noise, so it’s seems superhuman to me. Lol Quote
Shiny moose Posted November 8, 2020 Report Posted November 8, 2020 I took a job in 2005 in a falcon 10, among very stupid things they did, they didnt use headsets, yelling at each other in the cockpit was the norm, nevermind trying to hear ATC. I didnt last 2 moths before I left 2 1 Quote
