ShuRugal Posted July 23, 2020 Report Posted July 23, 2020 Well, I took a friend up for a flight Sunday, and it nearly resulted in calling out EMS. Hot day, and by the time we got back into the pattern, he was experiencing hydration-related muscle cramps. Got some water in him and sat him down in the shade, and he was fine in a couple minutes, but it sure was a wakeup call. Failure of planning on my part - I should have remembered to bring water along (I keep a fridge in the hangar stocked with it for exactly this reason...) I have just added a box of single-serve packages of powdered Pedialyte to my flight kit for mitigation of this problem in the future. 2
ArtVandelay Posted July 23, 2020 Report Posted July 23, 2020 Why not schedule flights in the early morning, when the air is cool and calm?
ShuRugal Posted July 23, 2020 Author Report Posted July 23, 2020 Sunday was neither of those things here. Day started at 80F. 1
RLCarter Posted July 23, 2020 Report Posted July 23, 2020 Damn.... how long was the flight? He had to be on the verge of heat exhaustion even before the flight,
MikeOH Posted July 23, 2020 Report Posted July 23, 2020 Just now, RLCarter said: Damn.... how long was the flight? He had to be on the verge of heat exhaustion even before the flight, Nah, I think it was the outside loop ShuRugal isn't mentioning 1
ShuRugal Posted July 23, 2020 Author Report Posted July 23, 2020 Damn.... how long was the flight? He had to be on the verge of heat exhaustion even before the flight, About 90 minutes. Dude's built like a toothpick. No idea what his hydration state was before the flight, but he wasn't showing any visible signs. 1
N201MKTurbo Posted July 23, 2020 Report Posted July 23, 2020 I did my ATP check ride in the afternoon in August in Arizona. The DPE showed me how to do it. He took two frozen water bottles and shoved them inside his shirt! 3

If you are going to do something do it well...Just a sign of a system working as designed. Now if you stop sweating...THAT is a problem. My dogs enjoy cleaning me up in cool down mode. Nice salty snack 2
