I Have a small part that needs to be painted (Replaced Cracked Gear Door) It is removable and is not a flight surface.

No paint shops at my field and I've Called, talked to, but not received follow up from the nearest and widely recommended shops (I'm guessing too small a job to be bothered with)

In any case - I was thinking of taking to local auto painter , Any thoughts on whether this would be an appropriate solution?

This is something that’s not hard to do. You can build a paint booth out of awashing machine box and a $18 Walmart fan

Should be fine.  If you can, work with your A&P to let him/her know what you are doing.   Weigh parts before and after if possible so there is not weight change issues.   Almost any singe stage PU paint will work.

My A&P paints that type of part all the time. Parts that take a beating: gear doors, wheel pants, cowls, wheels... the key to a good paint job is surface prep and a dust free area while the paint dries.

you can wash it and scrub with PreKote and dry with clean water.  then a light coat of SEM, Tempo, or Duplicolor etching primer.  Have painter scuff lightly with a fine scotchbrite pad and spray a couple thin coats of single stage polyurethane paint.

Just check with the IA you'll be using next annual that he agrees it falls under "preventative maintenance" of coatings for decorative purposes.  I imagine most IA's are fine with that, but you don't want to find out at annual time...

I used Reese Brothers to do some touch-up work on my cowling...

They did the paint on the plane decades ago...

Parts were sent to Reese in NJ, got painted, then installed after they came back....

Caution: Not a low cost solution...

If going the auto body route... know what type of paint was used originally... it is important to match the chemistry...
