TheTurtle Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 In annual found the crankshaft seal weeping a little and the #2 intake as well. IA is willing to defer both as its not bad but I want to get it fixed sometime in January when theres more time to have the plane down. Crankshaft seems like its going to be a pita since the prop has to come off.. But he seems to think its only a "few" hour job. I've seen other comments that R&R of the prop in 3ish hours plus the time to clean and install the seal. Looks like the crankshaft seal is a SL13792 The top intake gasket is a SUPERIOR SA629925 What is the bottom intake gasket? Searching for intake gasket on my engine model only comes up with the top one. Quickdrain on the right wing is leaking a little bit. Pushing the plunger in a few times seems to have stopped it but I'm just going to replace it. Seems to be a F391-72 available from Lasar. Fairly painless annual this year. Still have to swing the gear and do the compresion check but other than that no major squawks. Anoher mooneyspace post says to follow SI1342C to the letter. for instlaling the cranshaft seal. I havent been able to find this SI. Any body have a link to the doc? I'll be assisting on the work and while I trust my IA I'd like to have all my info lined up before we start. Quote

TheTurtle Posted December 28, 2017 Author Report Posted December 28, 2017 anybody got any idea on the difference in the 391-53s which seems to be 7/16-20 and the 391-72 which is also 7/16-20? Lasar says its the 53s which is $44 but the -72 is only $20-something and seems to cross to the mooney part number. Quote
N601RX Posted December 28, 2017 Report Posted December 28, 2017 The lower seal is a large o-ring. If the matching hole in the sump is worn it can be machined out and a steel sleeve pressed in. 1 Quote
Yetti Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 The crank seal is not a horrible job. You also need the super sticky glue. One of the seals is oversized if the current one has been spinning and wearing away the case. Rewiring the safety wire on the prop probably takes the most time. I found that needle nose and hemostats (fishing section of wally world) help grabbing wire. 1. Pull Prop 2. cut old seal out with dike 3. put friction tape on prop flange 4. Warm the seal and work over prop flange 5. Super sticky glue as described in instructions 6 reinstall prop and safety wire Can probably replace the O rings on the quick drain. Possibly a little permatex 3 on the threads. Had to use the heat gun to help loosen old one. Quote
TheTurtle Posted December 29, 2017 Author Report Posted December 29, 2017 Just now, Yetti said: 2. cut old seal out with dike The politically correct nomenclature is now "sidecutter". I do enjoy scisorring sidecutters though thanks for the info. My safety wiring is so bad I'm sure my IA will just do it himself. Quote
Yetti Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 Dike, dikes. get over it. I had to do the safety wire job over I got the "That is passable, but We would not other shops to know that came out of our shop"..... Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 I saw two diagonal cutters go into a bar.... Quote

cliffy Posted December 31, 2017 Report Posted December 31, 2017 Seems to me there was a way to replace the crank seal by cutting it and then gluing the ends together in place along with the special glue for the ring of the seal (plibond IIRC) Haven't done it a number of years though. It saved removing the prop (again IIRC). Quote
cliffy Posted December 31, 2017 Report Posted December 31, 2017 Now that I think of it , it came split. Quote
jetdriven Posted December 31, 2017 Report Posted December 31, 2017 There are two kinds of seals. one kind is a one piece seal with stretches over the prop flange and the other is a two-piece seal that fits together into the case. I pulled my prop off and replaced it with a one piece seal after soaking it in boiling hot water. Rumor those are the best kind. But they do take more labor Quote
cliffy Posted December 31, 2017 Report Posted December 31, 2017 Its been a few years since I did mine (hence the confusion) but on the good side it still is working fine! Quote
Yetti Posted December 31, 2017 Report Posted December 31, 2017 I believe the grumpy IA said there were some two piece for continentals or others. seems like a better idea Quote
Guest Posted December 31, 2017 Report Posted December 31, 2017 All seals are one piece, some are split to make installation easier. Clarence Quote
