Just to clarify, I see a pump and a fat stainless piece connected, then a fitting and another long piece of stainless...what is the long piece AFTER the fitting?  The filter is on the fat shiny piece of stainless attached directly to the pump?

How do you expose the filter on this?  Does that require fuel line separation?  It would seem that more problems from messing with this on an annual basis to clean screen/filter/check for debris?  Any photos of filter cleaning process or verbiage on AD?

The filter/screen is in the tubular piece after the pump.  You have to removed the blue line nuts not shown in the picture as well as the the cambium plated nut from the other end at the pump.  You hold the filter still while turning the nuts.

Once removed you need to hold both ends of the filter body while turning it to disassemble it.  The screen is inside.  A new "O" ring is needed for reassembly.  I don't have the part number, it's not list anywhere that I have found.  I measure it and match from stores.

I replaced the Dukes pump a couple of years ago with the new Weldon pump.  I did not think to remove the filter, as that would require new/old plumbing and I figured the extra filter would do no harm.  In the end, this configuration ends up with 4 fuel filters of different “microns”.  The finger screen in the tank, the gascolator screen, this filter, and the filter in the servo.  I too struggle with the benefit vs harm of cleaning each filter each annual.  In general, if feels like you are more likely to introduce something during cleaning than for particulate to get through all those screens.  The only time I seem to have had blocked injectors seems to be after maintenance and my thinking is that it is introduced as part of the cleaning or inspection.  That said, they do need to be checked occasionally, especially on older tanks that may begin to degrade to be sure they are not clogged.  In the end, need to take great care when cleaning these.

Ahh I have the Dukes 1499- pump. It appears this one is exempt from The filter or the AD.

FWIW, my 78J has the 1499 pump and it has the fuel filter installed.

I need a new O-ring, does any know the MS number.

Not sure which O ring you are referring to.  This is the one Aeromotive includes with the overhauled pump to replace the old style washer.
