G5

Recommended Posts

We had Gann aviation in LaFayette, GA install ours for $600 and we bought the unit from Sporty's at retail cost. Gann offered to install for $2,600 including the unit, but couldn't get a hold of one at the time for several weeks. Install cost seems to depend a little bit on existing equipment. If you've got a usable GPS source (as we did) install is very straight forward. If not, another antenna has to be installed.

Thanks for the info.  I am surprised that you were able to get the unit from Sportys. I was always under the assumption that avionics for certified aircraft had to be purchased directly from a dealer/installer.

I love it!  I have installed my GA 56 antenna and RG400 coax (which ran me a total of a little less than $100) already and plan to install the G5 itself myself during my next annual.  With a four foot wiring harness the certified G5 runs $2200 at Spruce, so a DIY job requiring antenna installation is $2300 plus a few fittings. $2600 installed sounds like a great deal to me, but I enjoy little DIY projects like this on the plane and my cars.

As long as you're an A&P or have one sign off on it.

Have you flown in IMC with it yet? My AI died just before my annual so decided to have one of these put it. Can't wait to try it out, especially for shooting an approach - just center the needle and hold the track of of the approach on the G5 and you're good to go.

I am looking at this for my Saratoga. I have an Aerosafe back up vacuum system but that doesn't address the AI if that goes TUP and I don't think I'd want to rely on the AI on the IPad. The G5 would provide real redundancy. My local avionics shop, a Garmin dealer, hasn't installed one yet but said it is about a three day job which sounds like a lot given that I already have two gps sources in the aircraft and wouldn't need an antenna for it. However he has already looked into the process for another aircraft he is about to do and it is somewhat involved with integration into current system, pulling existing avionics out of the panel,  plugging into the pitot static system,  etc. I am waiting on his written quote and it will hopefully be in line with what is referenced in this thread since they do great work and it would be convenient for them to do the install while the bird is in annual at the home drome.

Regards, Frank

I already had the GTN 750 installed and the shop took 10 hours for installation. It was the first time they've installed one.

Thanks. This shop recently installed a 750 in this plane. I'm wondering whether I should wait for the quote or head it off at the pass and tell him what I have learned here about the time charged to others. I have known these guys for years. Problem is my shop is balls to the wall now with ADSB installs and definitely not hurting for work.
