aajones5 Posted April 19, 2017 Report Posted April 19, 2017 I recently replaced the battery in my mooney and I wasn't sure if there was a special way to get rid of the old one, I didn't think I could just throw it in the trash. My instructor said he wasn't really sure what to do with it either so does anyone know if there's a proper way to dispose of an old battery, thanks! Quote
1964-M20E Posted April 19, 2017 Report Posted April 19, 2017 Your local scrap yard will probably take it and recycle the lead in it or maybe the local auto parts store or repair shop. They usually get a few dollars for the batteries when they recycle. You really do not want to throw it in the trash. Funny thing when leaving SnF my engine seemed to turn over slow before start. So I tell my self, self you are going to Orlando next week get new battery. I I get the new battery decided not to change it before I left for Orlando I put it in the plane just in case. The plane cranks up just fine to get there, to get home and for one more flight. Go figure. If I didn't have the replacement battery the plane would not have cranked up either leaving or coming home. carusoam Posted April 19, 2017 Report Posted April 19, 2017 (edited) 1) Sometimes they have value at the car parts store where you buy automotive batteries. Around $5. 2) Otherwise they have to take them in like used oil. 3) No difference because it came from an airplane. 4) or they sit at the hangar waiting for clean up day that doesn't happen for several years. 5) check with your local mechanic. He probably has a stack that goes to a recycler every now and then... Best regards, -a- Edited April 19, 2017 by carusoam 1 Quote
DonMuncy Posted April 19, 2017 Report Posted April 19, 2017 All recyclers (scrap metal yards) take (and pay for) batteries. Quote
Yetti Posted April 19, 2017 Report Posted April 19, 2017 desulfur them and make bullets out of the lead or scrap dealer 2 Quote
Dream to fly Posted April 19, 2017 Report Posted April 19, 2017 If you have and Interstate battery store they will pay you for your core. Otherwise Auto parts stores that sell batteries by federal law have to accept cores. They don't have to pay for them but they have to accept them if they want to sell batteries. 1 Quote
