thinwing Posted March 9, 2017 Report Posted March 9, 2017 It is entirely situational and I basically agree with above advice. That being said,I was responding to original posters question regarding a specific airport on a specific weekend.Bend airport is located at 4000 msl east of two main mountain ridges in Ore and thus is basically high desert.Right now a pacific weather system is headed in with lots of ice over the Cascades. My experience is after passage on fri morning ,cloud bases are at 5000 agl .His question ,if I am IFR on top approaching this airport and have to descend thru a cloud deck 1000 or even 3000 ft thick how many would do so giving freezing temps. My answer is based on many prior trips under similar conditions...But assumes 1 ATC will clear you right thru to 50 degree air and 4/5 thousand clear air below 2 after frontal passage the clouds in question don't seem to contain a lot of water and don't even paint on radar 3 By fri afternoon when his flight was to arrive...forecast was for scattered to broken. Not to encourage taking chances with ice...but this flight should be perfect for a low time IFR pilot to get some experience under his belt.Unfortunately as I stated, the return flight is another matter...l find Mooney airframes descend thru ice much better than climbing thru ice. 2 Quote
