Bart Chilcott Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 November 6th was the one year anniversary of purchasing my M20E. In my first 12 months, I have logged a little over 100 hours and flown through 10 states. I absolutely love it and thank everyone for their help and advice while I was searching for the right Mooney. The things I have loved most are my updated panel, the STEC 30, the extended range (64 gallon) bladder tanks, and the updated leather interior. I still have some speed mods I'd like to do to it but I hate to stop flying to make the improvements. Things I wish were different? My only complaint about the plane is I wish it had a JPI 900 or 930 instead of the 730. Thanks again to everyone on this site who encouraged me to take the leap. 6 Quote
carusoam Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 Anything on the list for next year? An integrated JPI would be great! Congrats on the anniversary, -a- 1 Quote
Bart Chilcott Posted November 8, 2016 Author Report Posted November 8, 2016 Thanks Carusoam, My JPI730 is integrated. I'd just like a larger display that is easier to read and use. (I cant justify a panel mod for that reason though). Things on my list are primarily speed mods (flap gap seals etc..) although I already have the cowl closure and a few others. My speed and efficiency are already great so I have trouble justifying the down time for the mods. 1 Quote
gsxrpilot Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 Bart, If you're not looking to rework the panel and remove all the primary engine instruments, you might take a look at the Insight Avionics G2 engine monitor. It is much easier to read as it has a modern, full color, high-resolution, display. It's also much easier to download data from the instrument with the integrated SD card in the face. Finally, it would go in the same hole as the JPI without any panel reconfiguration. I had one in my C with Fuel Flow, OAT, Carb temp, etc. I liked it a lot better than the JPI 711 in the M20K I fly now. Just a thought. 2 Quote
Bart Chilcott Posted November 8, 2016 Author Report Posted November 8, 2016 Awesome! Thanks for the tip! I'll look into it! The JPI730 is clumsy to program when adding fuel and I don't like having to cycle through things on it. Quote
gsxrpilot Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 I thought the Fuel Flow feature of the G2 was excellent! It doesn't differentiate between tanks, but does give total used, amount remaining, time to empty and current GPH. Topping off the tanks only required spinning the dial which stops at your max 64 gal. I was able to make several very long flights in my C, very confident that I always knew exactly how much fuel I had and how far I could go on it. 1 Quote
carusoam Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 The G2 (and family) has a nice FF @ peak feature for each cylinder. LOP / GAMI testing all the time... (Check my details, I learned this by flying in somebody's Eagle...) Best regards, -a- 1 Quote
Bart Chilcott Posted November 8, 2016 Author Report Posted November 8, 2016 The JPI700 I have now does that as well. It tells me GPH, gallons remaining, gallons used and gallons required to reach destination. But like I mentioned, adding fuel is a bit clumsy. 1 Quote
Browncbr1 Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 jpi 830 will work without any panel mod... you get FF and will integrate with GPS to calculate reserve at destination, MPG, etc... It would fit nicely in the hole where your 700 is with the screen horizontal... very nice plane! enjoy! Quote
bonal Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 If I had that panel I don't think I'd ever get out of the airplane. Very nice 1 Quote
kevinw Posted November 10, 2016 Report Posted November 10, 2016 Great looking panel! As Browncbr1 posted, an 830 would fit nicely but there are two more advantages if you're trying to keep cost down. The connections are exactly the same as your 700 making install simple and JPI will take your 700 in on trade. My 700 was on the fritz (display flickering) and I traded up to the 830 for about $1200. Adding MP and RPM required a little labor but not much. My only regret was not getting the oil pressure probe so I plan on doing that at annual. Look into it; it's not a bad deal and I've been very happy with the 830. 1 Quote
gsxrpilot Posted November 10, 2016 Report Posted November 10, 2016 Or go another step to the 900 and you can remove (and sell) all the original engine instruments including MP and RPM. 2 Quote
Bob_Belville Posted November 10, 2016 Report Posted November 10, 2016 Bart, I think you'd be very happy with a EDM 930. It looks like your right panel could look something like mine pretty easily. The Xponder, #2 NavCom and the 930 are stacked above the right yoke. All the engine gauges go away. 2 Quote
