N9937c Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 I have been holding out having my mooney painted until its 30 year birthday. I want to keep the small N numbers instead of the large ones. Anybody with more pros and cons other than the border crossing. Could care less about flying to Mex. as I fly to Del Rio often. thanks larry Quote
flight2000 Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Only con for me is all of the "know it alls" constantly telling me my numbers are illegal. I can't tell you the number of arguments I've had with folks that think they know better. Even when I show it to them in black and white in the CFR, they still argue that it's not right.... I have 3" numbers and my plane was painted last year. It's amazing how many folks don't know how to read a simple regulation. They see the 1981 clause and that those aircraft required the 12" numbers if it was repainted so they immediately say that all aircraft have to get the 12" numbers when its painted regardless of age. Even those will be eligible for the 2" minimums come 2011. Guess they'll need to edit the reg at that point. I'm like you in that I'll never fly outside the ADIZ and if I actaully did get a wild hair up my ... , I'd just simply use vinyl peel and stick numbers for that flight and remove them when I'm back. Brian P.S. None of the aguements are from anyone here... Quote
Piloto Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 There has been some talk by TSA of requiring all planes to have 12" numbers. If you go with the 12" you would not need to worry about a further mandate and having your plane repainted. 12" also makes it easy for the tower controller to spot your plane on the field. What I would not do is to have the numbers painted underneath the wing like some countries require. José Quote
scottfromiowa Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Personally I like your iddy biddy ledders Brian... Quote
flight2000 Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Thanks Scott. I hadn't heard that about what TSA wanted to do. 12" would screw with my paint scheme, but it can be done if required and wouldn't cost that much to fix. Still hate the idea of them screwing with it "in the name of security." Really! We shall see if it comes to pass. Mooney's are easy to spot anyway... Brian Quote
flight2000 Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Hey now..... if that was the case, we'd all be flying BBJ's.... Brian Quote
DaV8or Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 Question for those in the know, do all the numbers have to be the same size? Could they say, taper from 12" down to 3" or something? Quote
flight2000 Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 Yes, they must all be the same size. CFR 14 Sec. 45.29 Size of marks. (g) Uniformity. The marks required by this part for fixed-wing aircraft must have the same height, width, thickness, and spacing on both sides of the aircraft. Good thought though as it would avoid the wrap around on some Mooney's. Brian Edit: forgot that I have the full text here: http://www.67m20e.com/N_Number_Reg.htm Quote
