My aircraft's original log...first 9 years...was lost by a shop doing the annual.  There were mitigating circumstances:  the death of one of the shop's mechanics, but the logbook was never recovered.

As many have said; I keep originals, shops gets a clone, we are all happy. Last thing you want is a shop holding your logs hostage if something goes south.

The question that comes to mind for me is what kind of annual on a Mooney or even a simple airplane can be done in a single day as indicated by the OP

I believe it is called a Parker Annual.

On the other hand, I side with Mike Busch in that an annual puts too much stress on an aircraft (and the pilot/owner!) to be a good thing.

The most dangerous time to fly your plane is after an annual :o
