peevee Posted June 12, 2016 Report Posted June 12, 2016 kind of a dumb question, but I need to repaint the stripes we use to line the tires up getting back in the hangar. Airport ops doesn't do it and ours are all but gone. I was planning to just take some cardboard and use it to mask along the edges and spray it with yellow or white spray paint, but maybe there's a better way? Quote
rbridges Posted June 12, 2016 Report Posted June 12, 2016 okay, I'll add kind of a dumb question. Does regular spray paint hold up well on concrete to wear and tear? I've seen people paint their garages with regular paint, and it would peel, but that's with a heavier car rolling over it. As cheap as spray paint is, I guess you could touch it up as needed if necessary. anyway, I did something similar with my wing walk. Painter's tape and newspaper to form the edges. Quote
slowflyin Posted June 12, 2016 Report Posted June 12, 2016 My local hardware store sells asphalt marking paint. Brush it on and it dries really, really fast. 1 Quote
cnoe Posted June 12, 2016 Report Posted June 12, 2016 I just did this a couple of months ago. Rustoleum makes a specific paint for this that's available at Home Depot and other locations. I masked off the lines with 2" masking tape and rolled the paint on with a 4" trim roller. Simple and quick. The stripes don't stay "bright" but they're holding up well and look good. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk I think by far buying paint from home depot is the most cost effective way. Another option, which is what I did, is to find some one (craigs list) who stripes parking lots. I think I paid about $75-$100 (I no longer remember). It took all of 10 minutes and I had zero clean up after. --Note the lines will not be as sharp as a rolled line with masking tape. Quote
Hank Posted June 12, 2016 Report Posted June 12, 2016 I bought a case of asphalt striping spray paint and a rolling thing at Home Depot. Out the can in the thing, roll it on the ground and pull the trigger. Used it to redo the taxi line across the ramp from the end of the hangars to the hold short, it worked well. Edges weren't crisp, and I had to go twice to cover the width of the existing fading line. Holds up pretty well. This will be a bit speedy for a single hangar stripe 25-30' long, but I bet you could get your neighboring hangars to fund it if you also paint theirs. Or split the cost and let everyone do their own. One can of the striping paint isn't expensive, but the wheeled contraption was $50-75 several years ago. Quote
RLCarter Posted June 12, 2016 Report Posted June 12, 2016 As with anything the result will depend on the prep, use a stiff bristle broom to clean the asphalt or concrete followed by a leaf blower or compressed air to get rid of the dust. Masking tape (if its not too windy) and a 4" roller work the best, leave the tape on for around 30 minutes then remove it, allow the paint to cure for 24 hrs before allowing any traffic. The traffic paint works the best as it is designed to stick to asphalt (oil based), if your painting concrete remove any oil or stains so the paint will stick better in that area Quote
peevee Posted June 12, 2016 Author Report Posted June 12, 2016 Thanks, I figured tape would let the paint bleed under it since the surface isn't smooth. 1 Quote
peevee Posted June 14, 2016 Author Report Posted June 14, 2016 I used a 2x4 as a guide and a roller with that rustoleum stuff, seemed to work well, we'll see if it holds up 1 Quote
moodychief Posted June 16, 2016 Report Posted June 16, 2016 I work at an airport and we use old roof shingles. A lot less work than taping and masking. Quote
cnoe Posted June 16, 2016 Report Posted June 16, 2016 Finally a pro speaks up. How come you didn't post this before I wasted all that tape?!! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
moodychief Posted June 16, 2016 Report Posted June 16, 2016 Been too busy painting to get on Mooneyspace!! Quote

It works great with almost no clean up. Took me a total of 15 mins to put three lines down at the hanger and they are ready for some fresh paint after ~6 years but I let min go for 12 (very faded) Quote
cnoe Posted June 23, 2016 Report Posted June 23, 2016 You can also buy pre made strips that you burn on with with a flame torch. Cheap and very long lasting. Hmmmmm, interesting. Product name? Web link? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Hector Posted June 23, 2016 Report Posted June 23, 2016 I have it the best. My hangar neighbor runs a parking lot paint striping business. Whenver he refreshes the stripes in his hangar he does mine too. Mine look new all the time :-) Quote
Wildhorsesracing Posted June 28, 2016 Report Posted June 28, 2016 I just painted stripes outside my hangar and used normal Rustoleum with a 4" roller and cheap painters tape. I used blue for one plane and white for the other. I did the same outside my last hangar and it is still there after three(3) years. Quote
