bigskymooney Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 How much is too much TT on a M20J airframe? I've been considering a mid 80's M20J that was used as an IFR trainer so it was kept on a pretty tight maintenance program but it has over 9000 hrs on the airframe.
KSMooniac Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Jim is correct IMO. A well-maintained, high-time Mooney can actually be in much better condition than a low-timer that has been sitting a lot. Check the "consumable" items like rod-ends, gear biscuits, actuators & motors (for overhauls), etc. and enjoy the price reduction.
fantom Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 Jim and Scott are correct. Not all hours are equal, and I'd be more careful with a IFR trainer, because most of those students probably were non Mooney low timers.

rbridges Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 I've asked this question, too. I feel that a well maintained airframe could last a very long time. My only concern is reselling the aircraft. Althought 10K hours may not really be a problem, it may scare away potential buyers who aren't sure. My Tahoe has an engine timer in addition to an odometer. It's funny b/c I don't know anyone that asks how many hours are on a car, it's all about mileage.
carusoam Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 The real advantage of a low time airframe over a high time airframe.....Shorter log book reading. The old airframe will have many things replaced two or three times over. You may read about tires, starters, batteries, engines that are no longer related to the airplane. Otherwise each airplane should be reviewed on case by case basis with a real pre-purchase inspection. Best regards, -a-
