Maybe @Godfather was talking about TAWS-B option on the GNS afterall. Quote

Also has the Bluetooth / wifi been activated in the IFD units and does this allow interface with a table device to alter flight plans in the same way as the Flightstream? With the ease of installation for existing 430/530 users, TAWS, and wireless connectivity...that's a lot of functionality in one box. The AML STC that AviSimpson references may lure additional converts.... We are hoping to have some WiFi announcements very soon. Just waiting on the app vendor to release an update. The IFD440 has the ability to have Terrain Alerts and Forward Looking Terrain Alerts, we made this an option for customers. 1 Quote

You have me questioning myself now. From memory the 530/430 combo would pop up a warning on the screen if you were about to collide with a tower even if you are on the nav page. This is not the TAWS-B option that would notify through the audio panel. On the 750/650 you can see towers and terrain on the terrain page but the unit will let you fly directly into a tower on any other page. Quote

Hmm...I normally have xm weather and skywatch on which might turn off the terrain to keep the screen clutter down. But I'm sure they do not have a pop up warning screen for terrain. Quote
kpaul Posted March 8, 2016 Report Posted March 8, 2016 I don't have any weather going into mine at this time. And flying around NW Florida I have yet to encounter any terrain. Quote
jlunseth Posted March 8, 2016 Report Posted March 8, 2016 Don't you still have to verify VOR's are available along the route if you are not WAAS? Or run a RAIM calculation before every flight? I have forgotten, since I have had WAAS for several years. But that, to me, was a bigger reason to get WAAS than the LPV was. Just get in the plane and go. Well, ok, preflight and fuel first, and get a weather briefing. But eliminating one more pain in the butt thing to do is good. Quote

Question, a couple of times you have said these are options available to customers - - are these options extra cost? As in the WIFI/Bluetooth connectivity with Foreflight (GREAT feature BTW) is this option extra cost at time of purchase? how about the Terrain And Forward looking terrain Alerts -- Again, Standard now or extra cost? Hope my questions dont seem silly, I really do not know and am really seriously looking at locking in on a IFD440. Thanks! Quote

Yes, we found that some customers weren't interested in the WiFi/Bluetooth or Terrain Alerts (most were dual customers that already had those capabilities in their IFD540) so in an effort to reduce the cost the customer, we set these as options. Both are available to be added at the time of purchase or "unlocked" at a later date. Quote
INA201 Posted May 10, 2016 Author Report Posted May 10, 2016 Good afternoon gang. There is an Avidyne webinar through Social Flight at 7:00 pm-8:00 pm est this evening 5/10/16 discussing the updates to their software etc.. Go to Social Flight's website and take a look. Should be interesting. Quote
Simpson Bennett Posted May 10, 2016 Report Posted May 10, 2016 (edited) Hope to see you there! There will also be another one next Tuesday night. Don't forget the IFD training webinar that Master CFI Gary Reeves is doing tomorrow (Wednesday), more information at pilotsafety.org. Edited May 10, 2016 by AviSimpson Quote
INA201 Posted June 7, 2016 Author Report Posted June 7, 2016 Hi Simpson, I'm going to a shop nearby who sells both the Avidyne and Garmin products this Friday to get an estimate. I'm planning on swapping my 430w out with a new audio panel, ADSB out transponder, and a new GPS in a month or so. What is your recommendation for ADSB out/in, backup attitude, iPad integration(foreflight), ADSB weather in currently and looking forward? Does the 540 integrate with the GTX345? If I'm swapping the 430w for a 540 is it relatively simple labor wise or should I consider the 440 to save a few dollars. I can tell that the shop likes the 750 based on my phone conversations but I'm thinking apples to apples that the labor cost involved alone should put Avidyne ahead. I don't file IFR a lot but want a plane set up economically and reliably to cover any issues weather wise, vacuum failures etc.. I've attached a photo of the panel. Thank you for being on Mooneyspace and fielding these questions it has been a really big help. 1 Quote

Thank you for being on Mooneyspace and fielding these questions it has been a really big help. For ADS-B IN and OUT, I highly recommend our AXP340 ASD-B Out Transponder and SkyTrax100 ADS-B In Receiver. If you are ordering this setup before the end of June, you will receive the Skytrax100 for free. You can go either way as far as the IFD540 or the IFD440, both are very capable boxes and share much of the same features. A lot of customers like the added space of the IFD540 as well as having charts on the display. Both units will work with ForeFlight since they have WiFi AND Bluetooth already integrated in the box. As you pointed out, there is some added labor for going up to the IFD540 from a 430. The silver lining is that many of the connectors are the same between the IFDs and the GNSs. Moving items around the panel to fit the IFD540 might add some labor hours but you would encounter that going to the 750 as well. If you want, send me an email (sbennett(at)avidyne.com) and I can arrange a personal demo with our Director of Sales. He can walk you through a screen share so you can see the benefits of the 540 first hand. 1 Quote
