3914N Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I'm the proud new owner of an iPad mini. But in my G-model, space is at a minimum for mounting it. So how do you all do it? I'd love to see pictures of different setups. I'm particularly biased against mounting on the yoke or on my knee. Anything out there that is a bit more permanent, but functional? Quote
Hank Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I've seen pictures showing them mounted to the left somehow. Suction cup to the window? I'm curious about this too. Quote
carusoam Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 So many different ways to meet the preferences of so many different Mooney pilots... Each time a new iPad or iPhone comes out. There will be a new how to mount it thread... somebody recently posted a picture of one of those 'portable' in the instrument panel mounts. If you go to one of those JPI (or other engine monitor) it frees up a lot of space on the copilot side. We also have a source around MS for replacement IP sheet metal if you want to make a cool project. Use the force, or the search box at the top to find a whole bunch of details and photos you are looking for. Cut and pate this into the search box... iPad mini mount My iPad sits on my knee like an old knee board... Best regards, -a- Quote
LANCECASPER Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 (edited) This makes a great yoke mount for the iPad mini 1) One of these just behind the yoke: http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-zinc-u-bolt-motorcycle-mount-base-ram-b-231zu.html 2) Next, one of these: http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-plastic-medium-arm-b-socket-rap-b-201u.html 3) Then one of these: http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-universal-x-grip-ii-tablet-cradle-with-b-ball-ram-hol-un8bu.html#gallery or if you have a iPhone 6 Plus then one of these: http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-universal-x-grip-iv-cradle-with-1-inch-b-ball-ram-hol-un10bu.html Edited February 4, 2016 by LANCECASPER 1 Quote

Why do you have a bias against a yoke mount? The mini in particular (as well as full sized iPads) work great on the yoke. Several on this forum use that setup and love it. Anything you stick on the window blocks your vision to some degree. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 2 Quote
Hank Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I won't yoke mount my mini because it will cover up the clock, which I use to log flight time and switch fuel tanks. And no, I don't want to use a digital timer, it's so much easier to use the analog hands, and whenever the moving white minute hand overlaps the settable but not moving red minute hand, I lean down and switch the tank. No thinking needed, I don't need to write down start time, I can tell at a glance, etc. It's also easy to determine flight time for fuel remaining by counting the number of hours the little hand has moved, then the minutes that the big hand has moved. To say nothing of the extra inertia when moving the yoke, especially when slow in the pattern. How much room is left to either side to grip the yoke? I have a PTT and PC Cutoff button there. Also, I think it would get in the way of leaning down for the fuel selector, and obscure my StormScope, EGT and Carb Heat gages. Placed vertically to the left of the yoke, it may cover the final corner of the window, but way down low, in front of the storm window, isn't somewhere that I often crane my head to peek out. Wonder if it will block the red LED lights that replaced the ashtray? Placed vertically on the yoke, it either what's into my legs, the Jewels or my kneeboard, or else it blocks even more instruments. Not a good choice. Quote
cnoe Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 Fair enough. I don't have a yoke clock plus I'm a skinny runt and mine clears the belly and blocks nothing on the panel at all. Those snap-in panel mounts look really nice but I have no room for such. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
takair Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 We have a new yoke mount for vintage Mooney with a 30 day money back if you don't like it. I am biased, but it works quite well for our configuration. Take a look at http://www.flightenhancements.com or on the vender forum. It's simple, small and strong. I am working on one that allows you to retain the clock as well, but may block it. Regarding the clock though, I see it as less important, given the fact that most of the apps we use have timers and clocks. Quote
ArtVandelay Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I use my JPI to determine when to switch tanks, I do it based on fuel consumption, I make a note so I know how much I used when I switch. Quote

N601RX Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I flew around with it in my lap for a long time. I finally decided to try yoke mounting it and have been happy with that setup. I was able to position it so it would not block my panel view. I didn't want it up above the panel where it could block outside view. The Garmin app has a popup timer, I've been waiting for Foreflight to add one. The clock feature that is contained in the ios has a timer that will run in the background and then alert when the time expires by popping up a window as well as an alert to the headset over bluetooth. I currently have the ipad 3 which is a little larger than I would like on the yoke and have been thinking about getting a Air or Mini. Quote
Brandontwalker Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I yoke mount my mini and love it. However, my clock is not on the yoke and that is a valid concern. One think for consideration is using the tank timer app. It is great because it is easily customizable and it pops up an alert to change tanks on top of the foreflight screen. Marauder Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I used what Lance above provided parts. The only difference is I used the one that has a black plastic spacer that prevents metal to metal contact on the shaft. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Yetti Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 For a new concept, I am farther away from the yoke and panel and closer to the roof. I wanted something that was out of scan but closer to my face. The verdict is out, but it is still in the plane. Pretty much in the way of the radios, but very viewable by passenger and pilot. It is clamped where the throttle cables are held on the co pilots side. There is a welded cross piece for the tube structure. http://www.dx.com/p/lr360-universal-360-degree-rotating-holder-for-tablet-pc-black-233173#.VrNNCFn__EY Quote
Marauder Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I should add, almost all of what Lance mentioned. I started out with the X-clamp to hold the iPad but don't like how it allows it to rotate in the holder. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

The Ipad will rock back and forth in this mount. You will be disappointed if you purchase this. Quote
nels Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 I finally mounted mine to the passenger yoke. I have the full size iPad but it seems to wok well in this location. Quote

L = Lights I = Instruments (HSI matches runway, altitude pre-select set, Nav set) F = Fuel (fullest tank, fuel pump on), Flaps T = Trim, Transponder, Time Off Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 3 Quote
Hank Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 OMG! Don't be changing tanks as you take the runway! When I realize I forgot to change, I wait until 2-3000' agl to throw the selector. Quote

carusoam Posted February 4, 2016 Report Posted February 4, 2016 L.I.F.T. was a standard acronym back in the 90s or most likely long before. Probably before WordPerfect was around to type out personalized checklists... Today, it is just one line of a more complete checklist, process or flow. It is a check list not a to do list. Selecting the proper tank should have been to done a long time prior to this point. Great catch from the MSer community! Best regards, -a- Quote

OMG! Don't be changing tanks as you take the runway! When I realize I forgot to change, I wait until 2-3000' agl to throw the selector. Agreed, but I would wait until you are within gliding distance of an airport. You guys are silly! So let me tell you the Marauder story why the "F" says "fullest". Not long after I had bought my Mooney, I was using the factory POH "Before Starting Checklist". It has a nice section about loading stuff, the hazards of leaving loose food bowl and even making sure you have a flashlight onboard. Well, I did all that and had started on the "Before Starting Check" checklist: Just as I had started it, one of the passengers asked about how to adjust the seat belt that came from a 1972 Plymouth Grand Fury. I helped and then went to back to the checklist. Taxied out to the runway, did my run up and the LIFT. LIFT for me back then was "Lights, Fuel Pump, Flaps, Trim, Transponder". I started my taxe-off roll and was surprised by an engine stoppage at 50 KIAS. The culprit? Just as the passenger asked about their seat belt, I was in the process of turning the fuel selector valve to the fullest tank. Guess where I stopped moving it? Now my new "Before Starting Checklist" has the Fuel Selector as the last item and I added "fullest tank" to LIFT just to make sure. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

Send me a PM with your email and I will send you all of them. I have them in separate files. I print them out and then cut them to fit into the Jepp 7 ring protectors. The same protectors I have about 10,000 of from my days of using Jepps. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
