Gorgeous flying weather today from Pittsburgh to the Chesapeake region of Virginia.  Yesterday would have been "challenging" with some leftover Hermine rain and a 30+kt crosswind.  Rather than the risk that we'd end up in the wrong city, we came this morning and it was just plain pretty the entire way.

After a full week and a bit at Burning Man in the Nevada desert, it's time to go home. The route was 88NV to KCCR (dropping off my cousin and her son) then KFLG (overnight mid way home).

My Nephew Jax. He's 6 years old and has been to Burning Man 7 times. (His first time he was 4 weeks old.) I was able to fly him in and back out this year.

KCCR to KFLG at FL190 in 2:47. This is why I now fly a 252.

Today we finished the cross country trip begun yesterday.  Left Torrington and flew via airways at 12,000.  Some light freezing rain and some rime ice over Utah: glad I filled the TKS tank.  Lunch at Elko, NV, then on into Marin County in the afternoon.

Some fine views just east of SLC, terrain I was glad was visible.  Over Eden, UT looking SW:

Then past the ridges and over the Great Salt Lake and under ice-laden clouds:

Yesterday we flew to LVK for a belated birthday celebration. Coming in was very busy but got sequenced without delay. One of the things About moms is its right under the outer shelf of the SFO bravo and a common way to avoid the B if flying into or out of he Bay Area.  Lots of GA over fly the back yard at lower altitudes and some days depending on the approach being used the South West guys are so low looks like you could jump up and catch them. When we arrived and we're just about to leave the airport a fellow in a golf cart stopped at our plane got out and started taking a close look so I got out and flagged his attention to see what was up.  He identified himself as a Mooney fan that worked the FBO and is wanting to get himself a Mooney. I asked if he knew of MS and he said he is on it but I can't remember his identity it was a series of letters. He seemed very nice and I wished him good luck. Would have liked to have spent more time but my wife and brother were waiting in the car. As we were getting ready to leave for home we rolled on taxi behind another Mooney that departed ahead of us I think his tail ended 25W but not sure. The haze was so thick heading home and we were right at the top of the layer so just a solid brownish blue horizon below and clear bright blue above a perfect straight line. A couple nice approaches and decent landings made for a good day.

I just returned from a flight with my cousin who is visiting from Holland.  We flew a few laps around the Rogers Centre and the CN Tower, on departing down town Toronto we flew past the the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum's Lancaster bomber.  Within a 1/2 hour we were doing laps around Niagara Falls again with the Lancaster.

I'm glad that the events of 15 years ago have not hampered our freedom to fly.

After a great weekend with my daughter, I flew her back to Boston (KBED) from Erie, PA.  We had a great tailwind on the way there.  Of course, I paid for it on the way back.

Brad -- since you are based out of Erie, do you know the condition of the Titusville airport's runway? I grew up there and was thinking about making a Fall trip up to visit the old stomping grounds.

Off to the NW corner of the CONUS -- today we flew VFR in fine VMC from SF Bay Area to Whidbey Island.  Just a bit over 4 hours at 10,500' with light headwinds.

Mt Shasta's peak is nearly 4,000 feet above our cruise altitude

I haven't been there, but I'll ask at the flight school and find out for you.

Today departed Oak Harbor WA in fine VFR conditions and flew to Helena MT at 13,500 via direct.  Decades ago I flew my E along much the same route, but lower and more via Route 80.  If I do it again I'll modify my route just a bit to follow the roads and valleys more.  Today for about 100 miles total there were no acceptable landing sites in gliding range.  Trust in Continental, but have an out.

445 nmi in about 2.7 hours.

Jerry,

Looks like quite the trip you are taking.  I am now envious, I grew up about 10 miles south of Helena, and got my PPL flying out of HLN.  That Spokane to Helena route is beautiful country.

Been a couple of tough weeks since last flight. Clearlake is having their annual splash in for sea and amphibious planes looked like a good turn out on the lake shore and more planes on the ramp than I've seen in quite a while. Another milk run to walley world to stock up on goods. Made one of my best approaches and landings only to fowl it up on the home arrival.  Don't know what happened every thing was spot on and after touchdown Snoopy decided to keep flying. Well it started to oscillating and I fire walled and went around. Came in a little to soon behind  the twin Comanche that was ahead and caught his wake which yawed and rolled us to the left but caught it well and managed to set down ok. Ah me.

One thing different, OAT was 90 degrees and since I had some room to work with between departure and the mountains near home I set up a cruise climb of 130mph indicated 2500rpm and 23 inch mp which gave me 400fpm. Normal wide open throttle and 2700 and I'm just over 400 degrees on cylinder temp this more relaxed climb kept it under 400 degrees

Home today after 17 days "on the road" in the Ovation.  We stayed in CA nearly a week, ditto in Helena, Montana, plus a few days in Whidbey Island WA and two over-nights enroute.  Favorable winds much of the way, good weather so that fully half of the legs were VFR.  Arrived home in Baltimore and flew the only actual IMC approach of the whole 29.4 hours.  The flights totaled about 5,000 nmi -- it is a big country.  Burned about 440 gallons of 100LL and used 1.5 gallons of TKS juice. Max altitude was 14.000.  Average cruise GS was around 175 knots. Saw many old and met some new friends. Efficient FBOs and ever-helpful ATC, and yes Potomac Approach let me fly direct into the SFAR on the IFR plan today with no odd diversions.  It is a great privilege to fly around the country in our own plane.

Jerry, what a great trip! Now you need to update the map of states you've landed in. :)

Those are the states I have not landed in...I was tempted to make a touch-and-go in ND.  But my wife was with me and vetoed that utterly sensible idea.

Funny, I've not landed in any of those states either! Hoping to knock off Alabama and Louisiana next month. We'll see.

I also need all of those except Alabama. Been wanting to visit Louisiana . . . But I need to update my map, too, it's still less than half full but I did bag Alaska!

Well my "Today's flight" was pretty exciting... It consisted of a 4.5 hour drive followed by a 2 hour plane flight. Followed by now another 4.5 hour drive home. I'm only half way home now at 11:44pm. The flight was in a plane I've decided to scheduled a pre buy at Dash Air in troutdale Oregon. I would of planned it Advance  Aircraft since they are a MSC but the plane has had its last two annuals there. Greg agreed another set of eyes should always do a ppi. It just came out of annual in August so hopefully a good inspection will show that. We went up and ran the plane and avionics through their paces. I pulled, twisted, flipped, and adjusted everything there was to do in the plane. It was pretty great. I'll post more info after the pre buy. I don't want to jinx it:)

I will start with,, congradulations!!!...   looking forward to the plane skinny...

Well I dont want to jinx it either,, but, Im filled with confusion...

You are based in gcd, Oregon?   But might as well be in bfe, in Texas?  only 1032 Kmi apart?  seems odd

And where did you drive 4.5 hr from?  to the plane? where?

then flew for 2 hr?, to where?,,, what?, and back?,,,   then drive 4.5 hr?,,, but only get 1/2 way home?

To and from BFE...?

All the extra work/prep makes the acquisition process go much smoother.

Way to go, Charles!

Good luck dotting all the i(s) and crossing the t(s).

Best regards,
