A quick flight through downtown Houston at 2000 agl.  It was my first ever IFR clearance that had me follow a road.  i.e. follow I10 through the corridor.   To which I responded, what is I10?  --Followed shortly with another clearance:  vectors that follow the road.  i.e. fly heading 090.  I guess someone realized that IFR traffic might not always have a visual reference or be familiar with local landmarks.

Had to make a quick trip to our Florida home to repair Hurricane Mathew damage.  Saw a very nice sunrise over Lake Michigan on the way down, with a slight tail wind.  You know you bought property on a neat place to vacation when are driving to your home with the traffic like I had in front of me.

Since I could not make it to the Mooney lunch or homecoming I made sure I finally had at least  few hours late this afternoon to give the new avionics a try and get the new compass installed..I was very pleased with all of it. Probably going to remove the portable 796 and just use IPad if I need further redundancy. All in all very pleased with how it all works together. I'm still very much a novice with all of it so far, but hope to learn quickly. Quick in flight picture.

Tom,

How long until you think you will be up to speed and comfortable to the level you were before the upgrades?

Best regards,

-a-

I felt good with it yesterday, but was using just very basic functions. All depends on how much seat time I get in, but I would say 4-6 months before I feel as comfortable as I did with the standard six pack and at the point I was in IFR start up. Some might think that sound like a long time, but before I made the change I was just starting instrument work with my regular six pack panel and right now I'm just using basic VFR functions. To start to implement the transfering flight plans, approaches using the A/P etc..Maybe 4-6 months will get me close to where I was prior in the instrument phase of training. Right now it's pretty much brain overload trying to work through the several Aspen screen pages in conjunction w/ GTN750, STec and JPI. I try to fly once a week for a hour or two at a time, doesn't always happen that way, but that's what I try to do.

Been almost a month since last flight, Man my head was just not with it nothing major just never felt like I was on my game. Not sure if it was rust complacency or too many other things on my mind perhaps all three. Good news is a safe trip that served as a reminder get your head right and fly right.

Not today's flight, but yesterday. I took my wife and youngest son on a short flight to get some lunch and then fly over our house on the way back to Chino. It was my first flight with passengers! (Yes I know the DPE on my check-ride was technically a passenger, but I'm not counting that) Here's a few pictures but the full write up is over on my website.

Not a Mooney flight.  But I had some free time on a west coast trip and figured it would be good to work on the stick and rudder skills.  So much of my flying just involves pushing buttons and making sure the G1000 doesn't kill me.  It was fun to get back in a very basic plane.  I've never flown a tail dragger, but have been wanting to learn for the skill set that it demands.  I got a little time in before the fog rolled in for the day, yesterday.  It was a blast.   Salinas airport (KSNS).

My trusty steed took me to WV and back over the weekend. No fuel at home, so went 18 nm to fill up, their pump wouldn't turn on . . . Since I left home with 40 gals, we pressed on, ran the right tank dry 22 minutes out, landed on the left. Took 44 gallons to fill up. Came home today, 3:20 to a different fuel stop, added 31 gals, then 10 nm home. Saw lots of friends we haven't seen in a while, and did it most affordably. Driving takes as much or more gas, and varies from 9-12 hours depending on traffic and construction; the worst is around Atlanta and Knoxville. Had no problem passing either this weekend, but boy were the planes out around Hotlanta!

"A good time was had by all." :D

Somehow the first picture is mirrored. Door is above son's head, and the writing on his cap is backwards . . .

Lovely family, just look at those smiles,  perfect flying weather as well.  (I asuume you changed seats before you took off :)  )

For some reason the "selfie" setting on the phone mirrors everything.

You're out of your mind. I've taught three kids to drive and I have one left. I sure don't want to go through the extra expense and work to be a CFI just so I can have the same stress in the air that I did on the ground...

Not a Mooney flight, but I did fly my Mooney to get there and home. Today I took my gyrocopter endorsement check ride at Taylor Texas (near Austin). What a blast to fly!

At least you wore that classy Mooney shirt for your checkride. Congrats on that! I think autogyros look like a lot of fun!

Actually it was yesterday my wife suggested we meet at the hangar and take a flight to town after my work day. Very nice flight and always welcome cooler air to fly in. Made a real nice approach and super smooth landing. Return put us home just before dark. As always great to get Snoopy into the sky.

Flew from Alabama (kplr) to Schaumburg (06C) 2:45 at 8,500'. VFR the whole way and 185-198 knots ground speed at 14.4 gph.  It was a beautiful day all across the south and Midwest. Schaumburg is a great little airport with a nice restaurant. More than 100 people packed in and the food was great. image.jpeg

Todays flight was actually a few weeks ago, but i thought you would all like to see this.  It is the driveway to a country house of someone.  it is in the gap between Luton and Stansted going uptowards Cranwell.  In the video you can see the driveway it is the same distance to the left out of frame.  (about 2-3 miles long i think).  The house is at the very end of the video.

Just imagine coming up that driveway in your horse and carriage to visit the house, talk about intimidating!

All I can say is, it must be nice.

My wife and I plan to be in London towards the end of next year. I may need to call on you to show me around from the air. Of course I will take care of all direct expenses.

Nice flight to Nut Tree under solid overcast. Lots of traffic and as sometimes happens when I visit there I get runway dyslexia with runways 2 and 20 I always seem to get them backwards well no problem as I enter the 45 for the left downwind to 2 not 20 was right where I was supposed to be made the correction on my approach call with apologies for the stupid pilot trick.  I always enjoy a high solid ceiling 12000ft flying at 5500 made for an interesting sky to take in.

Flew from San Diego to Mammoth mountain today. Hard to believe the mountain is open for skiing since its was in the 90's this weekend in San Diego. Anyway didn't go up for skiing but a nice evening and hike in the mountains. I have a couple pictures departing KMYF over La Jolla shores and a video landing at KMMH.
