slowflyin Posted December 15, 2015 Report Posted December 15, 2015 Quick question for the Bahama flyers. My wife and I are scheduled to fly over to Eleuthera on 20 December. Forecast shows 2000 OVC for the entire day. Can anyone tell me what the MVA is? I'll be IFR and I don't have a clue how low they will let me go. Quote
smwash02 Posted December 15, 2015 Report Posted December 15, 2015 The MOCA is 1400 with an MEA of 4000 according to the chart. MVA is 3500. Here is the chart. Quote
slowflyin Posted December 15, 2015 Author Report Posted December 15, 2015 Thanks! I was using the AOPA planner at work when I couldn't find the info I jumped to the conclusion the info was presented differently for Bahamian routes. thanks again, joe Quote

You could fly the approach at Nassau to get under the layer then continue under the overcast "island hopping" to your destination if you are comfortable with the low level over the water for a bit. Bravoman Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 If you're going to Harbour Is make sure you check out a local joint called Conch Queen. They make the conch salad while you wait and it is the best you'll ever have. Cold beer and it's a great spot overlooking the bay. Quote
slowflyin Posted December 16, 2015 Author Report Posted December 16, 2015 Thanks Bravoman, we will be sure and give it a try. Quote
FloridaMan Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Any risks of storms in the area? It's common in south florida to have overcast with convective activity, even in the "cold" months, just the systems cook up a little more slowly, but I would still keep a large margin of safety and travel early in the day with plenty of fuel if there is convective activity in the area. Looking outside of my window right now I see massive buildups wearing lenticular hats. Quote
merrja Posted December 16, 2015 Report Posted December 16, 2015 Importantly there is no nexrad from about Freeport west..... it may look clear on the radar, but that's just because there is no data. Satellite images are very useful....clearing customs in Eluthra is a breeze. 1 Quote
