carl Posted October 17, 2015 Report Posted October 17, 2015 My Mooney does not have Jack Point to replace the tie downs. Is there something else to use in place ? meaning from cost effective point of view . carl Quote
rbridges Posted October 17, 2015 Report Posted October 17, 2015 unless you find something used, you're probably in for $50 for a set from a place like aircraft spruce. Quote
carusoam Posted October 17, 2015 Report Posted October 17, 2015 (edited) Lasar is the is known source for their aerodynamic jack point and tie down. One of the nicest improvements for all Mooneys... lasar.com I don't see it on their site. Sheri is the person to talk to. best regards, -a- Edited October 17, 2015 by carusoam Quote
Mooneymite Posted October 17, 2015 Report Posted October 17, 2015 Jack points? I just went to the hardware store and bought some bolts "long enough", fitted them with a large washer and a jam nut. I actually have two sets (since they were so expensive). One set I left the head on, the other set I ground to a nice rounded point. My jacks seem to work equally well with either set. However, DO NOT USE this idea. I'm one of those troglodytes who ties the tail to my hangar floor and risks pulling the tail off. Who knows what my home-made jack points will do! 2 Quote
Guest Posted October 17, 2015 Report Posted October 17, 2015 Except the Lasar tie down gets bent with Meyers hydraulic jacks because the jack is bigger in diameter. Clarence Quote

Alan Fox Posted October 17, 2015 Report Posted October 17, 2015 1/4 28 bolts and a stack of flat washers , there problem solved for 6 bucks... 1 Quote
Brandontwalker Posted October 17, 2015 Report Posted October 17, 2015 1/4 28 bolts and a stack of flat washers , there problem solved for 6 bucks... My AP gave me the same thing to use last time I changed tires. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
Andy95W Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 1/4 28 bolts and a stack of flat washers , there problem solved for 6 bucks... I installed this with washers and a lock washer and just leave them in all year round. A light touch with a wrench and it unscrews easily to install the tie down rings. Quote
Chimpanzee Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 Just put the LASAR point on, they were 45 the pair. Quite cheap in respect to aircraft. I have jack house jacks, so they hopefully will not bend. Quote
Bob_Belville Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 The Lasar combo tie down does not have to be swapped out between tie down vs. jack up. Several advantages. 1 Quote
Shadrach Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 Except the Lasar tie down gets bent with Meyers hydraulic jacks because the jack is bigger in diameter. Clarence I second this. I always remove the tie downs when jacking the plane for this reason. Quote

I have jack house jacks, so they hopefully will not bend. The Jack House jack will not bend the tie down because it has a smaller diameter cylinder, however they are taller than Meyer and therefore don't always fit under the wing. Clarence Quote
Bob_Belville Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 My old jacks must have a smaller piston. Quote
carl Posted October 18, 2015 Author Report Posted October 18, 2015 1/4 28 bolts and a stack of flat washers , there problem solved for 6 bucks... Thank you all for you input . At first I said I'll get the LASAR tie downs and jack point comb and be done with it. So I went to their web site and was extremely tormented. I don't think it is a very user friendly site. It took me a hard time to find the item. Then I tried to order it and i can't do it online. I'm guessing you have to call their sales person, parts dept. So I called, darn-it it's Saturday, closed no answer. Now i'm a little peeved! I take a break,I go out to the grocery store, when I come back and check this blog I see Mooneymite's and Alan's post , yes!, trip to the depot and I'm going to be set. Only difference is my tie down bolt size is a 5/16 -18 thanks carl Quote
bonal Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 Lake Aero web site is not really updated and it's not like Aircraft spruce etc all about buying stuff on line. It's a Monday through Friday shop but if you call they will get you whatever you need shipped out fast. Also, if you just need information they know Mooney's as well as anyone and will take the time to answer your questions. Quote
carl Posted October 18, 2015 Author Report Posted October 18, 2015 (edited) I spent $8.48 at home depot because somethings are in multiples packages. I attached pictures. These are simulations only, my wing is not made of Styrofoam, measurement are estimated , drawing is not to scale, I have only posted this as a learning experience and make no recommendations . carl Edited October 18, 2015 by carl 1 Quote

carusoam Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 When you get a chance call Lasar and talk to Sheri, anyway... She is like the gate keeper of the Lasar organization and is able to help get a Mooney pilot what he needs or at least point you in the right direction. Sometimes she has a post around here as well. By the way, nice mock up and drawings! -a- Quote
cliffy Posted October 18, 2015 Report Posted October 18, 2015 I guess I'm just a CB 2 grade 8 allen head screws and 6 washers-<$5 1 Quote
Guest Posted October 19, 2015 Report Posted October 19, 2015 I'll continue using the official Mooney Jack points. It would be embarrassing to explain that your plane fell off my homemade jack points and both wings need repair. Ouch!! Clarence Quote
cliffy Posted October 19, 2015 Report Posted October 19, 2015 What material are the "official" jack points made from? SS? 303? 304? Grade 8 is heat treated and pretty strong but then again I go old school and use the tail ring also (but not on big engine Mooneys:-) Your milage may vary. Quote
Hank Posted October 19, 2015 Report Posted October 19, 2015 420 / 440 is easier to find, and machines much better. It's also magnetic, so you can pick them up,with a retriever if you drop them so,we here inconvenient. Quote
BDPetersen Posted October 19, 2015 Report Posted October 19, 2015 $30 bucks from eBay. Work just fine. 1 Quote
Alan Fox Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 Sometimes its not the money , but the challenge of being a cheap bastard....That being said , every Mooney I have ever owned , had the Lasar jack tie downs installed.....Its just a great Idea..... 1 Quote
