Joe Larussa Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 Installing a new JPI EDM 700 and wondering what you guys are using for sleeving around your wires from firewall to cylinders and exhaust. Spiral wrap bad yes? Ideas? Quote
MB65E Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 (edited) I personally don't have any fire sleeve installed on over the wires on the m20. I have used it in the past, looks nice, but overkill and expensive. I use the silicone uni wrap tape where needed under zip-Ty's. Spiral wrap if I have a loom that might rub near something. Make sure it's the hi temp aviation type. I have pealed it from ignition harnesses after its melted away. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/uniwrap.php?clickkey=21224 -Matt Edited October 13, 2015 by MB65E Quote
KSMooniac Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 I just installed a -900 and didn't put anything over the wires. Just tie it away from exhaust and you should be fine. Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk Quote
Joe Larussa Posted October 13, 2015 Author Report Posted October 13, 2015 Interesting. So if you have let's say four small wires do you just lay them in the tape and fold over? Quote
carusoam Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 (edited) We are writing about the sensor wires, correct? They are intending to be in some pretty hot environments and be connected at one end with a probe that is in the fire. Fire sleeve is used to protect flammable and vaporizable liquids in their metal lines. When the insulation is not enough like under some conditions, the liquids vaporize.... I don't think my EGT or CHT have any additional protection. The installation manual for the JPI is sure to have those details documented. i would expect that the fire sleeve would not work to protect a melting plastic insulation. One hot afternoon that would require a hot start would melt the plastic. There would be no way to refresh it like running fuel back to the tank... You see? RobertGary1 Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 I bundle with zip ties and route through adels. In theory zip ties could vibrate and wear but not in 15+ years. -Robert Quote
Guest Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 Best practice is to use MS21919 series clamps to secure the bundle of wires to the engine mount tubes etc. I make small stand off brackets out of Stanley metal brackets from Home Depot, these keep the wires away from ignition wires, hot exhaust pipes etc. Ty- raps are known to wear away paint and damage steel tubes over time. jetdriven Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 McMaster carr has tefzel spiral wrap. It's heat resistant. Then clamp the bundle as Clarence described. Quote
N601RX Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 I prefer to route them up high and use adel clamps every 6 inches or so. After 4 years they still look like new. Lot of shops like to bundle them up under the cylinders where they take a beating over time. 3 Quote
Aerodon Posted October 13, 2015 Report Posted October 13, 2015 I like routing the wires on the inside of the exhaust an inlet manifolds - difficult to do but it prevents the probes getting bumped and the wires frayed. Never had a problem with the braided or 'yellow plastic' insulation melting. Use adel clamps and zipties. Don 1 Quote
