Wakeup Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 Anyone know how this is going to work or how much it will cost? Got a flyer in the mail today and couldn't find any info on the interweb. Thanks Troy Quote
ALP Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 I received the flyer from Appareo on Saturday but can't find anything either. They are calling it an upgrade and I think it is a transponder with ES and WAAS Gps. Does it display on an Ipad and is it for certified aircraft? This may be the beginning of the "cheaper alternatives" we keep hearing are on the way. StratusADS-B.com/StratusOwner Quote
N9405V Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 On the website they say that price has not been set yet, will happen after certification which they think will happen this summer. You can link it some how to the stratus 2 so it will then talk to the iPad and provide attitude information. Quote
Hector Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 It will be a transponder with built-in WAAS GPS and a certified ADSB out one box solution. The Stratus will connect via a short cable to the back of this transponder to provide the ADSB-in functionality via WIFI to a tablet. The Stratus will now receive the GPS signal from the transponder vice its internal GPS receiver and will be powered continuously by the transponder. The stratus can now be permanently mounted behind the instrument panel if you like (right next to or attached to the transponder) since it will be getting all the info from the transponder itself with its externally mounted antenna. Anyway, this how the Appareo guy explained it to me when I saw the prototype box in Oshkosh. Quote
carusoam Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 Is that the same or only similar to the 'cat' in the/another thread...? ADSB/WAAS/TXP/color display... Best regards, -a- Quote
Greg_D Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 It's their panel mounted offering and I don't think it's going to be cheap, but I hope I'm wrong. Quote

Interesting - Does coupling the Stratus to this particular ADS-b out-capable transponder have any benefit other than letting you permanently mount the Stratus? Having a panel GPS drive the Stratus doesn't seem to add much. Quote
kevinw Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 I received it also. At first glance I thought it was a panel mounted ADS-B in AND out solution but as we all know that's not the case. I suppose they don't want to jeopardize Stratus 2 sales with a single solution box. From what Hector posted the only real advantage to buying this over a Garmin or Avidyne ES transponder (assuming the price is similar) is the continuous power supply to your stratus 2 and the GPS if you don't have an internal GPS in your iPad. The continuous power would sure be nice. I have the GTX330ES / Stratus 2 combo and I like everything about it except the fact that I need to recharge the Stratus. Quote
PaulB Posted March 31, 2015 Report Posted March 31, 2015 I like that my stratus is completely independent of the aircraft's electrical system from a redundancy standpoint. I suppose this would still be maintained if permanently mounted unless for some reason the remove the battery. Maybe they would have to do this so it doesn't continuously charge off the aircraft battery while the engine is off. Quote
Wakeup Posted March 31, 2015 Author Report Posted March 31, 2015 Would be nice to have the I pad mounted like the experimental planes. You would have a glass panel for $500. Just thinking. Troy Quote

Having a panel GPS drive the Stratus doesn't seem to add much. I really don't know if there are other benefits other than not having to charge your Stratus ever again. I suppose the the GPS solution being broadcast by the Stratus will now come from a certified WAAS GPS. I'll be at Sun N Fun in a few weeks and will be getting more info as this is one of the potential ADS-b solutions I'm considering. Quote
Yetti Posted April 9, 2015 Report Posted April 9, 2015 I wonder if ADSB OUT could be "owner supplied" part? It is about $300 dollars in off the shelf parts. Quote
