Yes, the EI voltmeter is certified Primary as is the oil temp/oil pressure.  Brian has his two Garwin gauges for oil temp/pressure "covered".  The EI gauges are smaller (tach and manifold) and I plan to install six gauges to right of 696.  I will retain the Garwin fuel gauges and install below 696 (essentially where they are now).  The six gauges (all EI) will be the manifold Pressure, Tach, Voltmeter, Fuel Flow, oil pressure/temp, and the super clock.  The fuel flow has a certified primary for fuel pressure with high/low alarms (lights) that are programmable.  The other two Garwin gauges (cylinder temp and exhaust temp) are certified primary on the new Insight G3.  My avionics guy will fabricate panel for 1.5 AMU's and do installation/conversion to include cut-out of old right side panel (below plastic trim piece)  All EI gauges are lighted so no concerns with lighting except fuel gauges...that are really just there because they have to be.  $5.5 AMU's for entire conversion of right panel and upgrade to the 696.  I am going to do this in the spring vs. updating/finishing my IFR installation.  I can wait one more year for this.  Kids will be gone (at school) and I can then focus on IFR ticket.  I'm tired of squinting at the 496...

GEM is currently on bottom left of pilot panel.  The G3 upgrade is just under $2 AMU's and is a plug and play (can use existing probes)...see my photos for view of pilot panel/GEM location.  The G3 is NO primary for other (RPM/Manifold etc.) but WILL display these readings in additon to primary on Cylinder Temp and Exhaust.  The precision of the leaning appears to be VERY good/BEST? with the new G3.

I'm in planning stage right now - did a layout with front panel (downloaded)  and came up with this - the EDM 730 may have better dimensions to fit the lower left hole - The panel I layed out doesnt have the correct curve on the upper left - the program didn't allow for that however a slight trim should do it....

Scroll back up several post for the picture.  It is a 2 1/4 turn cordinator with nulite.  The Nulight is slightly larger than the instrument.  I think it is 2.4 wide by 2.6 tall.  Which engine monitor do you want to put there and I will see if it will fit in the CAD file.  My panel is flat, but by leaning the top back toward the pilot would allow the instrument to be a little lower and still clear the bar.

If the instruments on the right are any lower they will hit the yoke shaft.  If the ASI and VSI are any higher they will hit the top lip of the panel behind the panel.  The JPI web site says the EDM 700 is 7.5 long.  I think that would be ok as long as it is kept up higher. My Turn cordinator was around 6".


Kept in mind that the opening behind the panel is about 1/2 smaller than the panel itself and you have to leave a little room for the panel to move around since it is on rubber mounts. See Picture.

I talked to a local source here in Texas about milling out a panel - he mentioned that the AI had to be redone or replaced when you redo the panel because of a difference in the angle of the panel - has anyone experienced that with their projects?

If you don't maintain the original panel angle, you would want to match your AI to the angle that you choose.


Do some searching through this board.  There is a detailed discussion including price to modify the angle of your AI.


If I get a chance, I will try and find it. ...
