I currently have an Aera 796 and am paying circa $35/mo for the XM weather. Am considering buying a GDL-393D antenna to get the free weather and synthetic vision on the Aera 796.

Looking for input on the quality and presentation of "free weather" v. XM. Also how does the synthetic vision from the Garmin GDL-3D on the Aera 796 compare to the proprietary 3D view that comes with the Aera 796?

A deduction doesn't give you something for free. It does allow you to pay for it with pre-tax dollars which gives you a ~15-43% discount. But not free.

Puerto ricans get an even better deal. No federal income taxes yet all the same benefits as regular US Citizens.

I tried that here in Florida but got "no way José". The Federal Tax exemption applies for where you reside, not where you are from. But it applies to illegals, free health care, free schools and no taxes. Isn't Obama great. He is my hero.

I still use XM, base plan for $37 after taxes or so. I like the presentation on my 696. I consider cockpit weather a real safety asset.

I may go ADS-B sometime, not really free though, since you have to get a receiver of some type. I 'suspend' my XM account at times of lower use, like right now. I will be away with work, have the annual coming up too. Once I feel the need I can get it re-activated in 15 minutes.

I have a 396 panel mount and just renewed XM after letting it lapse because I have adsb in and out with weather.

In a m20j with no turbo or De-icing protection I found that Adsb greatly hampered my ability to find a way over-or under or in some cases though icing conditions.

Adsb is missing critical pieces that XM has;

Freezing levels in a map format. Helpful when flying over a cold front to determine if the front can be crossed in above 0c temps.

Cloud tops

Illustrated Fronts

Better radar.

So if I had a turbo de-iced mooney I'd probably skip the xm but I'm finding with out xm I go with a no go decision about 5% more. Is it worth 50 bucks a month???? Is to me.

Also if you get the master mariner subscription for $50 a month it gives you everything the pro aviation version gives!!!! But for $50 not $99....shhh don't tell :). Must be a programming glitch at xm

In addition to the above mentioned. XM shows base radar which shows the precipitation hitting the ground where as composite shows precipitation at all levels. I find this more useful for the landing airport. It also has better lightning with air to air and air to ground.

Which XM packages are you guys using? I have a 496 in my C, but the weather wasn't activated when I got the plane so I have no experience with what info it gives. Trying to make a decision on what to get for when I start doing more long distance flying.

Do you still get METAR's, TAF's, TFR's etc? I dont see those listed on the marine services.

I use master mariner on my 796. I get aviation services such as metars and tafs. I do not get the icing products that the top aviation product has.

I get all Metars tafs tfr ect....to comment to larry on the pirep screen if the pointer is moved over to the pirep it will show what type. For pireps I use the adsb weather pirep on foreflight because it allow easier recognition of what type of pirep it is such as a "snowflake" for icing or a arrows pointing up for "turbulence". Where as said before xm require highlighting the pirep with the mouse to see what kind it is. No big deal just when crossing a front and say I'm at 8k at 6c but ground temps below at -1c, in the rain I don't want to spend time looking at a turbulance pirep but would look at a icing one.

Sorry for spelling ...iphone Ya know
