66 E with turbo in New York, anyone know it?

That has many additions... from 201 spinner, to new prop, turbo, cowl closure, 201 windshield, and wing root fairings. The instrument panel has a whole bunch of new things including a JPI and a 6-pack layout.

It has so many things except paint...

Expect to use a very good PPI to make sure all the mods are fully legal, documented and working on top of the usual things. The logs will tell a good part of the story. See if you can get an email copy...

Where I get cautious...

The asking price is less than I paid for a C in Y2K that had none of the updates or FI, but had thousands more hours...

The story doesn't make sense either, or at best, its a story that adds no value to the sales pitch.

First owner was a doctor. But, he didn't finish the project. What else isn't finished...? A guy with enough money that doesn't want a fresh coat of paint on his plane? But put in the extra effort to slap a turbo sticker on the cowl, really?

Current owner is a college student. When I was in college I couldn't afford flying lessons, never mind good maintenance. What he is studying is usually a five year program. He should be needing money for school.

Now he is building an RV10? What student of a five year degree has time to build an airplane?

Get started on it. By the time you have the right plane, your other issues may be straightened out. Don't rush....

The history doesn't show any FAA recorded incidents. It was owned by someone in Louisiana for quite a while. It was bought and registered this year (April) by the owner. The flag for me is why sell it literally months after you bought it.

The Narco radios could be problematic for you if they don't work. Also, it is listed as a 66 but the airworthiness date is 1965 (that happens sometimes). I also don't know when electric gear became available, but I have not seen many earlier Es with electric gear.

Something sounds familiar about this. Wasn't there someone on here back earlier this year wanting to buy a cheap Mooney while they worked on an RV10? Could be the same person?

Sounds like it would definitely be a big project. The cosmetic stuff doesn't bother me as it would be kinda fun to over time due the interior and paint and give it my own personal touch and make it a one off custom. Having to worry about any possible airworthy items, including the tanks makes me very leary of it. Also from the thread above looks like the owner bought it much cheaper, put just a little into it and is trying to make some profit off of it, especially with the original asking price.

I'm keeping my eye on that plane too.  Sounds like a nice high altitude x-country ship if the wing spar isnt turning to dust.  I'm interested in hearing what the "Catch" is.  If anyone goes to see this plane, please take plenty of pictures and post it here.

A turbo E offers tremendous XC options, and while this one might be a little beaten-down, you can't really duplicate the turbo conversion these days.  If it fits your needs and you're willing to put some love and labor into the deal, it might still be a good candidate.  Definitely check for corrosion first, and fuel tank condition second.  A paint job might be needed sooner rather than later to stop corrosion if it is on the outside... if it is inside, in the cage, spar, etc. then run away.

 

One member here has a complete Rajay turbo system for sale that could presumably be added to another E or F, but it won't be as cheap as buying a complete plane with the system.
