cliffy Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 Having flown an iFly 700 for a couple of years I tend to like it and it does what I need. With the data base up for renewal (subscription $109/yr for all the charts) I'm torn between it and getting a Nexus7 with Avare (my wife has that and it works just as good a the iFly). Avare is a free app and no charge for charts and updates (contributions are accepted) Hmmm, I'm still debating. Quote
BigTex Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 I use a Nexus 7 with Garmin Pilot for my inflight EFB and an iPad 2 with Garmin Pilot for flight planning. I personally would never rely on anything free like Avare for my EFB with my life on the line. I a neck to choke if I have issues. Quote
1964-M20E Posted October 9, 2014 Report Posted October 9, 2014 I use the I-fly 720 with sky radar and like it. Readability is great, I like how it functions and to have all charts need for $109 a year great. My biggest complaint and I’m working with Adventure pilots now is my unit has trouble downloading the data via Wi-Fi but sometimes it will work fine. I can use a card reader and my computer to download the data with no problems. I have been contemplating getting the newer version of Sky Radar (not sky radar but similar) that has the AHRS in it as a backup. Quote
Amelia Posted October 10, 2014 Report Posted October 10, 2014 I'm really impressed with the clarity and stability of Avare. I use it as a back up on my GalaxyNote2 phone, and it seems quick, intuitive, and capable. There are goodies on the iThingie EFBs that are more sophisticated, but for free? And a $150 tablet? How can you go wrong? Quote
carusoam Posted October 10, 2014 Report Posted October 10, 2014 John, The newest SkyRadar has dual frequencies and the AHRS... http://www.skyradar.net/skyscope-receiver/skyradar-dx.html $850 I still have the old one... Best regards, -a- Quote
midlifeflyer Posted October 10, 2014 Report Posted October 10, 2014 Avare is truly amazing for a free product (I currently use it as a backup app) but (i am in the process of demoing IFly on Android) for IFR I think IFly is far superior. Quote

Best regards, -a- looks like the price has come down some. Might have to pull the trigger. Oh I was thinking of the Sky guard which also can be had with ADSB out. 1 Quote
Amelia Posted October 10, 2014 Report Posted October 10, 2014 I just got out to the airport to head for the nearest commercial airport to pick up a couple of incoming houseguests, and realized as I slid into my seat, that oops, I'd left my iPad Mini at home. Well, darn. But wait... I did have my Samsung Note2 cell phone, and what do you know, AVARE was waiting there for me. Perfect. Purple line on a bright sectional to my destination, runway extensions, approach plates and airport diagram right there, easy to read, easy to remember how it worked, even though it had been a month or more since last I looked at it..... If you have an Android gadget, tablet, or whatever, do give this free and very well-thought-out EFB a try. Quote
carusoam Posted October 10, 2014 Report Posted October 10, 2014 And bring a wire, cuz cellphones don,t have excess battery while operating the GPS parts.... Best regards, -a- Quote
