I've been a corporate pilot for over 30 years and I currently fly a Falcon 50 and 900 for a company in Santa Barbara. I'm an ATP and a CFI and have just under 15000 hours. I look forward to learning more about these great airplanes from you guys.

I can relate to a couple of the above posters. I came into Mooney ownership just this year with the purchase of a 1961 m20b. I only had 100hrs tt in your typical Cessna line up and was a little fearful of the transition. I got the experience of my first big cross country picking her up in TN and flying home to UT with an experienced pilot. It's much better eating up the real-estate at 145kts instead of 110. I was worried prior to my first solo that I'd forget to lower the gear so I embedded the checklist "BC-GUMPS" into my head and use this during landing. I admit I am guilty of forgetting to close the cowl flaps during cruise, I imagine this will come with time. I now have logged around 20hrs in the vintage girl and I'm enjoying ever minute of it, I even have withdrawals if I go a week without flying.


Honestly! It’s been a much easier transition than I'd imagined... :)

I'm Steve from Fayetteville, AR.  I have a 77 J Model which I've owned for about 5 years.  GNS-480, S-Tec 50 A/P, EDM-700 w/FF.   Based at ASG in Springdaqle, Arkansas.  I can't explain it, but even before I became a pilot, if someone had asked me if I was to ever own an airplane, what would it be?  I would have said a Mooney.  Kinda weird.  Just got back last Sunday from a trip to the Bahamas.  Nice vacation, great flight experience.

Hello everyone,  Im a private pilot with instrument rating 800 tt, mostly in pipers; however, I did get about 25 in a Mooney Oviation and loved every minute of it.  I am currently looking for a Mooney and need some advice on what an aircraft with no log books is worth?  Looking into purchasing a repo airplane without log books, but in very good condition,  any advice on this?    Thanks in advance, Ricardo

Without logs, you will have to go through a long list of ADs and SBs to make sure everything is current, in addition to any annual inspections or overhauls that might be needed.  If you know something about the plane (or could find out) then you might be able to figure out where it was maintained and re-create some or much of the history.  Depending on the age of the plane and how much is missing, this effort could very well wipe out any savings you think you get by buying it cheap.  As Ken said, a 40 yr old plane with no records is obviously missing a lot of history.  A 5 year old plane still on the original engine and prop...less of a problem IMO.  I agree with him that there are a lot of other good planes at good prices in this market to choose from.

My name is Grant and I am a certifiable Mooniac. I used to work for the dealer network but got laid off last June. Fortunately, I've been able to keep my hand in aviation enough to not have to leave it totally. Most people start in an older airplane and work their way up, but my first Mooney experience was in Acclaim serial number 0004 and I've worked my way from the latest and greatest backwards to the Bravo, J, and C models. All of them are great. The old ones fly just like the new ones (albeit slower and not as nice inside).


Though it's not the reason I joined this forum, I do offer proficiency and initial operating training to Mooney owners. My specialty is long bodies but I fly anything that is safe and well-maintained.


I think that about covers it. Looking forward to enjoying this forum.

just a note to say how much i enjoy this forum that i just discovered!


i bought my '78 201 in 1995 and have flown it about 1500 hrs. over those years.  on a recent summer trip from santa fe, nm to our home base in olathe, ks we trued about 155kts. at 11,500' and covered about 590 nm in 3 hrs. 50 min. on 36 gallons of avgas...not many planes other than the 201 could have done that!


i just overhauled the engine at about 2250 hrs.  it was running fine, but..........


one nice addition at o/h was an m20 air oil separator.  it's really nice to be able to run a full 8 qts. of oil.


ours is a 252 paint scheme(white/burg/gold) with round windows and an ovation pattern leather interior.

thank you...

santa fe is a great destination..we are anxious to return!  flying to florida next.  my engine always blew out the first two quarts..now with 8 qts. it seems to run cooler oil temp..i also o/h the oil cooler, replaced the baffling, and replaced the thermavern...or is it verna therm??-ha!

Larry here,


Retired Army helicopter pilot.  Always wanted my FW rating and got it a little more than a year ago. I bought my 68 "G" before I got my ASEL PP. This way I would have an incentive. My first plane and it still has the original paint on it.(Though it looks descent from a distance). I park at KZPH in central Florida and continue to fly helo's also!!!

Hi, my name is Jason and I am 23 years old. I just bought my first mooney (1961 M20B) earlier this year and am LOVING it. I have already taken 1 trip to arizona and 1 to Portland (and one from portland when picking her up). I am a commercial rated pilot with instrument ratings (single and multi's). I was looking to become an airline pilot but am now leaning towards ATC or Corporate aviation. We shall see....I was an intern for Continental Airlines and went through their 737 training program and loved that too, so maybe the big boys are still for me yet
