Mooney1401 Posted March 20, 2014 Report Posted March 20, 2014 My plane is in for its annual inspection. One of the complaints I had was a smell of fuel in the cabin when the plane has been parked for a while. It seems my pump is leaking. Does anyone know of a good(affordable) option to fix or replace it ? Thanks J
OR75 Posted March 20, 2014 Report Posted March 20, 2014 are you sure it is the pump ? The pump is under the pilot feet below the fuel selector Close the fuel selector, let it sit for a while and see if it still smells fuel. I am betting on a leak behind the side panels, or further in the wing that seeps back toward the cabin. Don't ask me how I would know that.
carusoam Posted March 21, 2014 Report Posted March 21, 2014 The electric pump, if the seals are leaking, will drip out the bottom drain. The seals last about 20 years. This is from my O experience. A couple hundred bucks to remove, reseal and replace...done by local A&P. Best regards, -a-
jetdriven Posted March 21, 2014 Report Posted March 21, 2014 The search feature will explain this, but that Dukes fuel pump is sole-source from QAI and last I saw it was 1300$.

Bob - S50 Posted March 21, 2014 Report Posted March 21, 2014 I agree, do not assume it is the pump. However, if you need to have the pump overhauled try these guys: http://www.aeromotorsllc.com/aeromotorsllc/ Their price is good and their turn around time is quick. They did our pump in December. Mooney1401 Posted March 21, 2014 Author Report Posted March 21, 2014 Thanks for the help guys. I will follow up with your advise
Ellioth Posted March 21, 2014 Report Posted March 21, 2014 This time last year when our '78 M20J's Dukes boost pump went the way of all things aviation, we ended up getting a new pump (4140-00-19ACJ) from C J Aviation, Inc. in Kendall, FL, for approximately $1,300. Our intention was to have the original rebuilt at a "famous" rebuilder in the west Chicago suburbs but they were unable to get parts in a timely mannor and the estimated cost was very close to that of the new pump!
orionflt Posted March 21, 2014 Report Posted March 21, 2014 CJ aviation is a good place for pumps, never habd any issues working with them.
M20F-1968 Posted March 21, 2014 Report Posted March 21, 2014 There is a Mooney retrofit number to replace the Dukes with a Weldon. If you need a pump replacement, do not rebuild, buy a new Weldon which is cheaper and more reliable. John Breda 3

We had ours overhauled for about half that cost at the company I referenced above. Bob

Bob - S50 Posted March 21, 2014 Report Posted March 21, 2014 Bob, lots of things have changed with regard to Dukes' predatory pricing. What's CJ's price today? Byron, We didn't use CJ's and we did not do an exchange. We pulled ours out, sent it to AeroMotors in Wisconsin, they overhauled it in about 2 days and shipped it back. The pump was out of the plane for about a week. If I remember right it cost us something between $600 and $800 for the overhaul. Bob
