stevesm20b Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 Thinking of getting an S-tec 30 autopilot for my M20b. Anyone have any experience on where to go in the southwest to have one installed?
Mooney65E Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 Talk to Jeff at High Desert Avionics Lancaster, CA (WJF) He's an S-Tec dealer / installer.
Mooneymite Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 What sort of "installed" prices are you gettting? The experimental world has broken the code on low cost/high performance autopilots. I'm waiting until either the FAA smiles on such installations, or there's price pressure on the certified world. The legacy autopilots are crazy expensive by comparison! In the meantime, my Brittain works pretty well. Has Cobham made any changes over at S-tec, or is it business as usual?
MHemperly Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 I second Jeff at High Desert. I've know that guy for a couple years and never seen bad work from him.
John Pleisse Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 Great AP, through dealers only. The outfit in Albuquerque is great.
AmigOne Posted February 6, 2014 Report Posted February 6, 2014 Gulf Coast Avionics quotes System 30 for experimental at $12K so I guess for certificated another 3-5 grand. Crazy!
stevesm20b Posted February 7, 2014 Author Report Posted February 7, 2014 Most of the quotes I have been getting have been over 18 grand installed.
KSMooniac Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 I'd continue to sit on the sidelines for a few more months at least and see if the new relaxation of certification rules allows us to install a Trutrak or similar in a Mooney. There is no good reason NOT to allow this to happen. I really like my STEC-30, but I'd have a hard time paying 18 AMU today to put it in my J, and I sure as heck would have a hard time putting one into a B at that price, even it it might be the nicest B on the planet. (no disrespect intended!)
Mooneymite Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 Most of the quotes I have been getting have been over 18 grand installed. Wow! That's probably 50% of my plane's value... For 18 grand maybe I can find an aspiring young blonde female to fly me around. However, I'm sure there would be "installation problems" that might run the cost up considerably. :-) 1
animalmover Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 OUCH! 18g is a lot. I have a S-Tec w/altitude hold in my B and I love it! Not sure I would " bit the bullet " at that price. Might be cheaper to upgrade to a Mooney with a previous install. 1
