I just received my new iPad Mini and replaced my Nexus 7. I purchased the one that had the cellular capability. My interest was primarily to have the GPS available when needed. I have not activated the cellular service. I do see however some great benefit to having the cellular capability turned on at different times.

For those of you who have cellular service on your iPad, can you answer some questions for me? Based on the Apple website, it looks like I can buy either a monthly plan or a pay-as-you-go card. It also appears, that Apple is working with the cellular providers to allow some flexibility's for moving from one service to another. The unit I purchased has the AT&T SIM, has anybody converted over to one of the other providers? If so, what are the limitations?

I have a Sim card from AT&T in my iPhone 5. Can this card be moved from the iPhone to the iPad mini and be used? If it can, it would make for a nice backup capability if I ever needed it on the iPad.

Chris, I just purchased an iPad air. The mini was a little to small for my eyes. This one I got through Verizon and I had enough minutes on my cell plan that I d/n have to purchase any more, check with your cell provider and see if this is possible, I also have the stratus which may help if my glass goes down since I have not flown behind steam Gage's for some time, I know you have the Aspen so I assume you would enjoy the same. Since using the IPad since Foreflight was on the scene it seems as though we have become accustomed to great avionics even though. Backups therefore it's hard to regress.. C u. Dan

I never heard of using a AT&T / Verizon \ Sprint etc iPad and crossing it over to another provider.

I have used AT&T IPad in the air in the Midwest data coverage was bad.

I have used Verizon IPad in the air in the Midwest and data coverage is very good

I have used iphone 5 with Sprint in the air in the Midwest and data coverage is bad.

If you have a mini and an Iphone, you can link them and just use the data service from the Iphone.  No need to have two plans.  Go through creat a hot spot on your phone and then connect them on the bluetooth setting

This ability depends on the carrier and plans. On the older ATT plans tethering either wasn't allowed or cost extra. On their new data share plan, you can tether from your phone to any device (laptop, ipad, etc.) Also, on the share plan, you can add your ipad for $10 more. I currently have 2 phones and 1 ipad on my data share plan. For me it was worth the extra $10/month to eliminate the hassle of linking the two each time I wanted to use the ipad on cellular. I do use tethering to my laptop though. I know verizon has a share plan too, but I don't know any details on that one.

My opinion is that having a data plan on an ipad greatly enhances the utility.

My understanding is that the radio hardware on the latest ipads is all the same regardless of carrier. Earlier ipads had specific hardware depending on the carrier.

This is the method I use and it works great - on the ground. As you know, once in the air cellular reception get dicey at altitudes above 4k feet.

Using the iPhone as a hotspot, may require an IOS 7 update...

Did this, this morning...

No word on how well it works in the field.

Best regards,

Every Dunkin's, mcD and xfinity allows for free connection. Xfinity or other provider requires a home subscription. Xfinity is widely available in the center of most Cities and towns in NJ...

Thanks Dan. I will need to sort through this data plan thing. In addition to upgrading my Nexus to the Mini, I went a little overboard and bought an Air as well. One nice reason to have children -- built in excuse to do hand me downs to them. :)
