Joe Zuffoletto Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Damn! I rolled over my right foot walking down my driveway this past Friday night and broke the 5th metatarsal bone clean through, right up near its root in the mid foot. So now I'm stuck with a big boot and crutches for 6 weeks! No pain, luckily, but damn inconvenient. I can't even drive! A completely unexpected and freak accident. The timing isn't entirely bad as my Acclaim goes in for its annual next week. Still, looks like there will be 3 or 4 weeks after the annual is done where the plane will sit idle. Not to mention the RV-8, which will be idle the entire time. Step carefully, my friends. Quote
aviatoreb Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Doh! I have done that exact thing while running. It hurt me! But I ended up breaking a tiny bone on the top of the foot. I was still able to stay in shape bike riding, with surgeons blessing, since bicycle shoes are stiff cleats that do not involve the little foot bones at all. Be well. Quote
mooniac58 Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 I feel your pain. On July 30 I was in a bad ATV accident in the Teton Mountains in Wyoming that resulted in compression fractures in 3 vertebrae in my thoracic spine. 6 weeks in a full back/head brace, more pain than I ever knew possible and about 10 weeks until I saw the cockpit again. Seth Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 I admit, I did that when . . . running down the upstairs hallway when I was 11 years old. SNAP. I've done it to both feet a few times between the ages of 11 and 17. Here's to happy healing. -Seth Quote

But aren't you bailing on aviation anyway? If I lived closer, I'd offer to ride the heck out of your planes to keep em wet Quote

RJBrown Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 I do live closer and now that I am planeless I would be glad to offer my pilot services. Quote
orionflt Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 I feel your pain. I'm In a neck brace for another couple of weeks due to a fractured C7 vertebrae nafta 6 fractured ribs that obtained when I hit a patch of oil while riding a motorcycle. Quote
Jamie Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 jeeeez... we're living on the edge.... I didn't even know it was possible to break your own foot just by walking. Where do I file a bug report... Quote
rainman Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 Torn meniscus in my knee, waiting on my MRI (retired military Tricare), can still fly with a brace on my knee....thankfully! Good luck Joe. Quote
larryb Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 At least none of these injuries I'm reading about are caused by the mooney! Quote

Joe Zuffoletto Posted October 30, 2013 Author Report Posted October 30, 2013 At least none of these injuries I'm reading about are caused by the mooney! Ain't that the truth! I've broken my left foot in three places during the course of my life, none of which were in airplanes. This is the first injury I've suffered to my right foot. I suffered a major dislocation of my right hip in 1979 in an AUTOMOBILE accident. Had that hip replaced in 2005 and all is good. I've had a few back problems over the years, but nothing like what's been posted on this board today. I feel for you guys and I hope you all recover soon. Thank you all for your responses. I wasn't looking for sympathy... just wanted to vent my frustration. RJBrown, let's talk. Please PM me. Good night, all. Joe Quote
PTK Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 I draw the only logical conclusion that flying is indeed safer than walking, riding a bike or motorcycle. Get well soon Joe. Quote

Hank Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 I draw the only logical conclusion that flying is indeed safer than walking, riding a bike or motorcycle. Get well soon Joe. A fellow pilot at my home field broke his foot last summer, stepping down from the wing of his Cherokee 180 . . . Apparently feet are deceptively fragile. Quote
Marauder Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 A fellow pilot at my home field broke his foot last summer, stepping down from the wing of his Cherokee 180 . . . Apparently feet are deceptively fragile. You're being kind Hank! I suspect an overweight pilot had more to do with the foot's fragility... than the foot itself... Quote
Hank Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 Nah, he's barely 200 lbs, maybe in the 190s. Quote
Joe Zuffoletto Posted October 31, 2013 Author Report Posted October 31, 2013 A fellow pilot at my home field broke his foot last summer, stepping down from the wing of his Cherokee 180 . . . Apparently feet are deceptively fragile. Coincidentally, my wife broke one of her "ring finger" toes this past summer. A much worse injury, I might add, involving surgery, pins and lots of pain. It also involved a pair of crutches. She was out of town when I discovered my foot was broken, and I texted her from bed to ask her where the crutches were. She replied they were under the bed. So at least that part of this injury was convenient! Quote

carusoam Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 Safer than running.... Best regards, -a- Quote
flyboy Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 So there we have it. Proof that walking to/from the airplane is the most dangerous part of flying. I broke my foot a couple of years ago when a 90 horsepower outboard motor fell on it. It hurt so bad I thought half my foot was cut off. I have a high pain tolerance but that was terrible. Here's to a speedy recovery to all. Quote
Awful_Charlie Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 I've managed to break my right tib and fib three times - car, skiing and bike racing. I think it's suffered enough now, so trying to avoid any more breaks, aircraft induced and everything else Quote
fantom Posted November 5, 2013 Report Posted November 5, 2013 You guys need to lace up your flight boots tighter Don't forget the CamGuard for all that downtime. Quote
